Abnormal AFP, Normal Ultrascreen
I haven't posted on here much, but I could really use your help. I'm 22 weeks and just got back abnormal AFP result, however, my ultrascreen was perfectly normal. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm freaking out now. TIA

Re: Abnormal AFP, Normal Ultrascreen
if i remember correctly, the AFP has a very high rate of being completely wrong. it is very common to get false results or i think something like that.

Thanks...feeling a little better about it now and switching ob's next week to someone who's a little more informative and on top of things.

Re: Abnormal AFP, Normal Ultrascreen
The AFP has a pretty high rate of false positives. This is why I opted not to have the AFP. Good Luck

Re: Abnormal AFP, Normal Ultrascreen
My understanding is that the Ultrascreen is much more accurate than the AFP. The AFP has a terrible reputation of giving "false positives." Many people choose to skip this test all together for that reason.
I know it will weigh on your mind until the baby is born, but having a normal reading on your Ultrascreen should give you some peace of mind since it is a more accurate test.

The same exact thing happened to me!!!
The baby was fine - my dr. told me if the u/s comes back ok, then you really should have nothing to worry about!!

Re: Abnormal AFP, Normal Ultrascreen
I had that happen as well...I opted for the quadscreen and a level 2 ultrasound after the triplescreen showed an increased risk and the quadscreen and ultrasound came back fine...my ultrascreen was great as well...I decided against the amnio that the doctor offered and my daughter is perfectly normal...
