Abnormal NT Blood Results
When I went for my 12 week NT scan, they said that everything looked fine. All the measurements were great. Today I got my blood results back and it came out that I have an increased risk for Downs... 1/166. Im freaking out!! The dr tried to reassure me that with my age (28) and my sono results, that everything is probably fine, but this is just a reason to do further investigation. We have no histories of Downs in either family... This is an IVF baby, now Im scared that that may be the reason....
Did anyone have abnormal numbers where everything turned out fine??? I need to put my mind at ease. Did you do the amnio?
thanks

Re: Abnormal NT Blood Results
I have not been in this position but I used to work in a cytogenetics lab. I can tell you that the majority (most!) of the amnios I had karyotyped due to increased risk from NT were completely normal. It is just a screen and the NT is by no means diagnostic of anything.
That being said it is up to you whether or not to go forward and have the amnio done.
I wish you the best of luck! Easier said then done but please try not to worry

Re: Abnormal NT Blood Results
This happened to a good friend of mine last year. They completely freaked her out- she did the amnio adn everything was fine! She has a happy and healthy 8 month old boy.

Re: Abnormal NT Blood Results
Okay, I did not experience this, however, that test has a high (5%) false positive rate. A friend of mine came back with the same results as yours and now has a happy and healthy 6 month old. I have heard sooo many stories of people being worried sick because of this test and all for no reason. Take it was a grain of salt - 1 in 166 is still less than a 1% chance. Hang in there!!!!

Re: Abnormal NT Blood Results
As the op above just wrote these tests have a high false positive rate. My AFP test came back abnormal. Will they re-do your blood work?

Re: Abnormal NT Blood Results
Yes, with DD my blood work came back with a 1:90 chance of my baby having Downs.
We opted to do an amnio based on other factors that showed up.
Everything came back 100% perfect.

Re: Abnormal NT Blood Results
Its only a screening and in no way is a diagnotstic test, there are alot of false positives.

Re: Abnormal NT Blood Results
DH and I are going to "genetic counseling" to learn more. They are doing a more extensive blood test when I am 16 weeks that may give me a better indication. Im trying not to be a nervous wreck and tell myself that there is a 99.5% chance that the baby is fine.
But I won't rest easy until I know for sure, which will be in a few weeks (Im 13 and a half weeks now) and the wait will drive me crazy too.
Thanks for the support

my husband's co-worker had the same thing happen to her. the test came back with an increased risk of Downs and her baby was born w/o Downs. like the above poster said this test is just a screen and is wrong many times. i know its easier said than done but try not to worry. many and for you and ur DH!!!

Re: Abnormal NT Blood Results
I opted not to do the NT scan. I sat with the doctor and he said I'm young and low risk and if I wasn't willing to do an amnio not to even do the blood work because 9 x out of 10 it comes back iffy and then the next step would be an amnio. Since I wasn't willing on getting an amnio I passed on the test altogether to save myself unneeded stress! I'm sure your baby will be nothing but healthy.

Your situation sounds just like mine. My blood work was drawn at 14 wks. Meanwhile, it should have been taken btwn 16-18 wks. Apparently, it makes a huge difference. Once they redid the test my numbers were normal. I know it is hard, but try to remain calm.

I think I replied on another one of your posts.
This is exactly what I did: worked out well for me (normal screen at 16 weeks). This month is going to be hard. Hang in there!

You dont know how much better this makes me feel? So you had abnormal blood results for your first test (I took my at 12 weeks!) then the 16 week one was fine?????? I hope that happens for me!

I believe I was 14 weeks or at the end of my 13th. It was supposed to be done btwn 16-18 wks. My doctor to play it safe wanted to wait until I was 17 wks so I was right in the middle. Two weeks of hell! Everything was fine as soon as she got the results from the second test. Plus, the dr was able to see in the Level II that everything was okay ( for me b/c my tests came back abnormal for spinal bifida). A friend of mine also had a false positive test. Her numbers were low for down syndrome and her baby is fine.

________________________________ your baby will be fine..the nt was fine..don't worry just to add. downs has NOTHING to do with family it can and does happen to any one at ANY age..as far as IVF, this too is not a reason for the increased numbers
