Re: About how much do you think this would cost?
Depends on what you want the inside to be. For 4 bedrooms and 1 bathroom I have seen ads from larson home improvement for around $75k. That is everything but paint and carpet.
Danielle and I got a quote from them, but we were also going to extend our house and build a master suite with 2 closets, and a huge master bathroom, plus 3 bedrooms and another bathroom. This was over $130k.
We decided to just live in our house the way it is and then in 5 years or so we will sell......When the market gets better.

Upstairs Dormers START at 75k. You aren't going to get anything cheaper than that.

I paid $40K 9 years ago for 4 bedrooms and a bathroom with CAC.
But, that was 9 years ago.

Since 911 everything including wood are a lot more expensive than they were back then. Look into Larson Home improvement. Their dormers start at 75k I think and they do really good work.
You wont find it cheaper unless you find a company to do just the shell and then you do the rest of the work yourself or hire a plumber, a electrician, and someone to close everything up. That will cost you around the same in the end.
This is why we decided in the future to sell and buy a bigger house. It isnt worth it for us to put that kind of money into our house. We will never see it again.
I could see it if we bought a foreclosure for under $300k that needed a lot of work and then put $130k into it. Then it would be worth it.....not for what we have into the house now.
Thats our situation. For you it may be worth it to put the money into it.

9 years ago you were also able to buy Nassau County Real Estate for under 300k. Actually make that under 200k.

Re: About how much do you think this would cost? Home extension related help!
We did a full dormer a little over two years ago (ripped off the entire top of the house) - put up 3 bedrooms and full bath - this included everything - framing, insulation, sheetrock, taping, spackle, electric, plumbing, tiling, carpepting - except the paint (we did that ourselves). We also redid our duct work to run in upstairs and added CAC and replaced the furnace. We did it for approx. 80k...
BUT, my DH's father and brother are contractors. We did have to pay them, but at a lower rate. I really don't know how much more it would have been to hire out of the family. I would say approx. 10 - 20k more.
