? about icing sugar cookies

do you just spread the icing on or do you pipe it on with a decorating bag and tip? It always looks so smooth on the cookies I see. I don't know if spreading it on with a spatula will give me those results?

most likely, if you are seeing a smooth icing on a cookie....its more of a glaze than a frosting.

no it's not a glaze it's called royal icing. It's the hardened icing that's used to decorate cookie (among other things). It's almost like a frosting but it dries hard, it looks like this:

No, don't spread it on. Use a decorating bag and try to make the icing a little "looser" if that is the look you are going for. For piping, you want the icing a little thicker. It's trial and error to get the right consistency.

i just spread it right on. It tastes so yummy! My sister makes the best sugar cookies and they taste so good with vanilla icing on them. although they dont look as pretty as the ones in your picture, they are so yummy!
