Accident on LIE leaves 8 injured BY HANA ALBERTS AND WIL CRUZ Newsday Staff Writer
July 26, 2006, 12:21 PM EDT
A van carrying eight people, including six children, overturned this morning on the Long Island Expressway and flipped off the road, officials said.
None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, though a 13-year-old boy in the van suffered a broken leg, Suffolk police said. He was taken by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where his condition was not immediately known.
The van was going east on the expressway when about 9:45 a.m. just past Exit 64, its front left tire flattened out, police said. The driver lost control and the van, which was in the left lane, swerved across the highway before overturning into a ditch, police said.
No other vehicles were involved.
But the 13-year-old boy was ejected from the vehicle, said Sgt. Mark Bouse.
"He was outside the van laying on the ground when we got there," Bouse said at the scene afterward.
Fire and police units rushed to the scene and authorities temporarily closed the highway's eastbound lanes. The service road remained open.
The boy's mother -- who like the other victims was not immediately identified -- also was taken to Stony Brook, police said.
The others in the van -- another adult and five other children, the youngest of whom is 2-years-old -- were transported to Brookhaven Hospital.
Meanwhile, the van, which landed on its roof, was towed from the ditch shortly after 11 a.m.
The wreckage was extensive. Doors were peeled away from the body of the vehicle, glass from blown-out windows littered the road and grass, and a back tire also was flattened.
A plastic box of baby-wipes lay in the grass nearby, and a green fleece sweater hung from a branch.
Bouse, meanwhile, said several motorists pulled over at the scene after the van overturned.
"They indicated they were all seated and belted," he said of the witnesses.
