add me to the looking for a job list

i'm a speech therapist in a school, its my tenure year, and i just got told that they won't be offering me tenure Chat Icon which means i'm out of a position for next school year. apparently they " haven't seen much improvement" or something... maybe thats becasue they have me running between 3 schools with 43 kids on my caseload, AND they kept rescheduling my observations.
i think its mainly an issue of budget where they just don't want to have to give anybody tenure anymore.
so, now i'm trying to figure out what to do- do i even want to stay in this field, since i apparently am no good at it? its tough... and WONDERFUL timing, since we just booked a trip to hawaii yesterday Chat Icon good thing we got the trip insurance...

thanks. i know.. its just that this job is PERFECT. the school is literally across the street from my house, so i have a 2 minute commute- i'm not stressed out from sitting in traffic, you can't beat the school schedule.
i did EI as one of my grad school internships, and i loved the kids and the work.. but i am SO self conscious with the parents or caregivers around, watching me, critiqueing me, having to explain why i'm doing what i'm doing.... plus, i hate driving- LOL
i don't know... its just hard not to take it personally and it makes me doubt my skills as a therapist. because, like you said, there is tons of work out there for therapists- i have 43 kids on my caseload- so i know the school is going to have to hire somebody to replace me... its not just a matter of budget cuts, its a matter of me not being able to do my job... so its tough.

I am so sorry to hear this.

they are doing the same thing in my district, denying very hard working teachers tenure after their third year. It is unacceptable. But now other districts are hearing about it and we are getting a bad reputation in terms of getting new teachers. Nobody wants to come work with us. And I dont blame them.

Aw, it sounds like you got sccrewed. They got 3 years from you and now they're going to hire someone cheaper. Chat Icon

The budget cuts in CA have us all scared too. I think we're going to find out on Friday if we're getting a pink slip.

Thanks Chat Icon yeah i think its a combination of budget cuts and not wanting to hand out tenure, and maybe me not being cut out for the school setting...
luckily, like i said, DH has a great steady job with the government, and we have no kids, so i can afford to use this opportunity to explore other settings. i enjoyed my grad school internship in a nursing home, so maybe i'll try out the adult population for awhile... we'll see. good luck to you, too! its a tough situation!

Did you see this coming, or did they deny you tenure out of nowhere? Can you fight it with your union's help? This seems so unfair. Chat Icon

Re: add me to the looking for a job list

Please do not take it personally. How in the world are you supposed to spend time improving when you're so busy running from school to school?
My mother is a speech and language pathologist and has her own contract with the county. She stopped doing EI and only focuses on pre-school now. It's good because when the school districts are off, so is she. Don't be worried that the parents are critiquing you, you are there to help their child, adn they are mostly looking to you for guidance and support. It might be something worth looking into, even temporarily. Try sub-contracting and see how you like it. It's all a learning process, and you can make some really amazing personal and emotional connections with your clients. My mom has many clients who could barely swallow to eat when they were born and they are now thriving teenagers that she still keeps in contact with. Anyway, hang in there, I just thought I'd give you a little bit of the other side of it.Chat Icon

thanks!! yeah... thats the one thing thats helping me get through all of this- that speech is a HUGE field right now, and there is NO shortage of jobs... right now i think i'm going to look into contract or agency work in other settings, like EI or adults. there are so many opportunities out there, and i think maybe this happened for a reason. i think i needed the change, but would have been too scared to do it on my own.
anyway- thanks for the ideas and good wishes! i'll keep you posted on what happens!

Re: add me to the looking for a job list

Before you give up though, i would contact your union rep. ASAP!!!!!!! They can't deny you tenure without sufficient proof---and honestly, most people that don't get it, know it's coming because of negative observations, etc.

EI work is great, but the state pension and benefits you get in a school district are so key, particularly for your retirement. i would look into this further if i were you.

I hate to be terribly negative here, but I do know that they can deny you tenure really without much of a stated reason, and there's nothing the union can do about it. Creating a stir about it can burn bridges you might want to keep standing. Just my advice. Good luck with whatever you decide. Chat Icon

thanks! yeah.. i did talk to the union rep. i actually don't want to create much of a stir, becasue this is the school our future kids will go to - definitely have to leave on good terms!
i'm not too worried about the benefits and pension, because DH works for the government and has a great retirement program ( hes saving enough for both of us) and good health insurance.
right now, i'm just trying to be positive and look at it as a chance to try out other speech settings.

thanks! yup.. especially since this is the school our future kids will go to! gotta keep it neutral!
i'm just trying to be positive and look at it as a chance to try out another speech setting. i'm fortunate in that its not like a classroom teacher where there are a ton of people competing for the same jobs.... there aren't enough speech therapists, so there are a TON of openings out there. just have to find the right one for me! Re: add me to the looking for a job list

I'm really sorry this happened to you! Its not uncommon unfortunately its hard to work without tenure b/c they can dismiss you at anytime without cause.

I have a question though, if you are denied tenure because they say you need improvement what do you say when you interview at a new school? Is there a way they can check?

thats what i'm worried about. BUT, the good thing is that if apply to speech jobs that aren't at a school ( like a nursing home, early intervention, etc) i can just say that the school setting just wasn't the right fit for my skills. each speech setting is so different and uses such different skills, etc.
BUT if i apply to another school... who knows. The good thing is that there is a HUGE need for speech therapists, so theres not as much competition for jobs are there is for classroom teachers...
we'll see what happens. right now, i'm just trying to be as positive as i can be Chat Icon
