Adding on to a house...

There's no way we could afford this anytime soon, but I was just wondering what the costs were to add on to a house. Well, I thought we could put 2 bedroom upstairs. Our house is a ranch so there is no upstairs right now. We don't live on LI we live in NC. I was just wondering if it would be worth doing at some point, but didn't know if the cost would outweigh the worth. Thanks!

Re: Adding on to a house...

we priced out how much it would be to dormer a house...our contractor said it would cost between $30,000 and $50,000

Re: Adding on to a house...

How much of a dormer was that.... how many sq/ft additional or rooms additional were you getting?

And was that dormering up or to the sides? What town?

Sorry for all the questions... but I am curious.

Thanks! Chat Icon

Re: Adding on to a house...

We are going through the process right now...and our original quote for the contractor (really just the carpentry) was 38K. However....our quote from the electrician is 3500, and the plumber is 3K. Then....to buy the bathroom fixtures was another 5K.

Back to the contractor....since we are doing a dormer...they were going to try to match the siding...but it won't be exact....so that lead to residing the whole house....8600. Since we are doing the siding....we figured we should do all the windows for the house (since the ones on the main level would have been replaced in the next year or 2)...can't wait, then have to do the siding again...that's another 2000.

Our 40K budget went out the window...and by the time all is said and done...will be closer to 75-80K Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We were looking at a house in Commack and thinking how much it would be to dormer up...have the masterbedroom upstairs and the 3 rooms on the main floor. I am not sure of the sq/ft...we didnt really get detailed like that...we were just getting a general idea. Hope that helps!!
