ADHD medication

My son was just diagnosed officially with ADHD. Does anyone have any insight on Daytrana and the side effects?

Thanks!

Re: ADHD medication

Not off hand but some of those side effects for these meds are freakin' scary.

DS will be 6 and was diagnosed but he's doing well now and no way will I give him meds at this point.

How old is your DC?

I know there are some more experienced ADHD moms on the special needs board who have had experience with meds.

My son has been on several different medication, not Daytrana though. He was okay for a while on Concerta, but as he grew and they had to adjust the dose, he had terrible side effects. I'm not sure if changing hormones played a role as he grows closer to puberty, but he became sad, withdrawn, unwilling to participate in things. When he mentioned one time that he wished he was dead, we removed all meds immediately. Very scary for us and him. Off of them, he is perfectly happy, funny kid (who can't pay attention for a second). I'd rather him that way.

Anyway, nothing to do with Daytrana, but we tried four different meds all with this same result. No meds for us! Just be aware and keep an eye out for anything even remotely different.

My son is 10, just started middle school. I have seen and known for all of elementary. I have tried to hold off do a lot of non-medicated things to help but at this point he is getting too old and it's starting to affect his academics.
My doctor said something to me today that registered with me he said "Do you want your 16 year old to get behind a wheel knowing he has a big issue focusing?"

Re: ADHD medication

Gotcha.

I have heard a few parents mention the one that they don't have to be on all the time.

My brain is tired so the name escapes me at the moment.

But you can have them take it during the week when they are in school and not on weekends/vacations,etc.

Not sure if the side effects are just as awful though.

My son also started middle school this year. It's been a rough adjustment, and there is so much more homework to do it's crazy. We are managing for now, but he is sometimes doing homework for three hours.

My kids have never taken that one but side effects vary per child. My kids did not do well on Vyvanse but my niece has no issues with it. They are now on concerta and doing great.

This might have been me. My Stepson was on Concerta, which, does have scary side effect warnings. He was only taking it during Weekdays before school. Never on the weekends. We only did weekends the first time he tried it to see how he would be. He was seeing a psychiatrist once a month to monitor his health and dosage. Because he was growing we did have to up the dosage after a month or two of him taking it to help with his focus in school.

I know as parents, you want to try to avoid medication by all means necessary. However, in our situation it really was the turning point for my SS. Till this day his parents biggest regret is not doing something sooner.

What medicine works for one, might not work for another. You just have to try it to see if it works for your child.

As far as doing homework for 3 hours, that is terrible. Why not try to medicate him to see if that lessens the distractions and allows him to finish the homework sooner? That isn't "managing", that is just too much. Just my opinion though. (sorry busymom...I was only skimming, and didn't read your entire post at first, I agree, those kind of side effects are not acceptable)

So many people have their opinions on medicine, but if it makes your child's life EASIER to be on it, why not? Work to find one that works for your child, just like with any other medical condition. If your child was diabetic, or had another condition that affected their life on a daily basis, would you choose not to medicate? (rhetorical question)
