administration certificate
Does anyone have this? If so, could you explain to me how it works? I was just at the Brooklyn College website and it looks like it's not a 2nd Masters... that it's just an "advanced certificate"... I want to do my advanced salary credits in something that I can use later on instead of just taking random classes... I hope to do an admin position one day... are there special requirements? anything I should know? Where did you get yours?

i've looked into this before, and I think you need 3 years of teaching experience to get into the programs.

you can't even take intro courses without 3 yrs? what if you take them as a nonmatriculating student and then at the 3 yr mark convert to matriculating? hmm

I don't know about the rest, but I know for a fact that Stony Brook does not allow unmatriculated students into their Advanced Certificate programs at all, so you must have 3 years of teaching completed.

thanks guys.... it was something my principal actually told me i should do now...
just got this from Brooklyn College's website... " Candidates for the Program must be experienced State certified teachers, guidance counselors, school psychologists, or school social workers. Selection is based on a candidate's academic record (at the bachelor's and master's degree levels), relevant educational work experience, professional references and a personal essay."

Thats not true, I am currently unmatriculated for advanced certificate and I have taken 9 credits so far for Stony Brook. Before you apply for matric u need to have 3 years. But, you really should have a few years behind you because the first few classes are all what if situations and if you have never taught it is hard to understand!

thanks..... yeah, my principal told me i should be doing this now... this was my 1st year teaching, but my position was teaching + admin so he said that i should have no problem.... we'll see

I think it really depends on the program. My husband does the CITE program through the college of St. Rose and they require three years experience. My school district through a partnership offers the Stony Brook Program and they also require three years. However, I did mine through NYU and I don't believe they required three years (but they wanted you in a program, either masters or doctoral).
Adminstrative requirements for certification are also changing as of September - another thing to consider.

I am in the same program as Jenn's husband. Technically, I just completed three years of professional experience in April, but I began the program in October. I wanted to take classes unmatriculated but CITE/College of St. Rose does not accept any credits previously taken before you begin their program.
I am glad I did it. I hope to be completely finished by August. But, I dont know if I will ever pursue an Administrative position. But the classes and internship, IMO, were worth it.
On the other hand, I cant wait to be done, Between classes, papers, working, and interning, it is a lot of work at once..I am stressed out.

I wonder if that just changed, because when I applied I was rejected due to not having enough teaching experience. I then asked if I could go unmatriculated and was told non-matriculated students were not allowed in the Advanced Certificate programs.

My school has a program where they pay for stonybrook to come to us to teach us - a cohort program. None of us matriculated so I don't know why it said that. They just told us we had to matric befor our 4th class!
ETA: I also think I am in a different program. I belive my program is 36 credits. I have all the info in school so I will post on Tues!

Maybe because it's a cohort and SB is coming to you guys, you don't have to be matriculated?? That's awesome that you have a bunch of courses out of the way already!!

I am in the program right now at CW Post. It is a 30 credit program for the administration certificate which is for school building leader and also school district leader. If you want the masters degree you can take 6 additional credits. I am halfway done....I finish the program in May of next year. FM if you have any questions.
