Administrative/Executive Assistants...

Has anyone made the move from a professional position (such as Analyst/Associate) to an Administrative/Executive Assistant position?

How was the transition - financialy, career-wise, and what was your main driver?

My first job I was a Claims Analyst, then promoted to Supply Chain Coordinator. (5 yrs total)

My 2nd job I was an Order Analyst (almost a year).

Now I am an Admin Assistant at a college. The pay is a little less, but I really think that has to do with relocating from NY to FL. I'm not sure what an admin asst at a college in NY would pay.

I've only been here a week but I love it! Honestly, at my other two analyst jobs I wasn't treated as an equal... the mgr's loved their power, KWIM? Being an admin asst here, i'm treated like an equal! They really appreciate me. But then again i'm not sure if that has to do with being in FL vs. NY.

If you're talking in a financial institution it's not a great career move. I feel that once you made the jump it's hard to go back.

My SIL worked in I-Banking and moved into an Executive Asst position for quality of life reasons. The money is pretty decent and she leaves at 4:30 vs. 10:00

i know admins that make 6 figures but they work over 40 a week...

someething i might consider when and if i have kids when they're toddlers bc life would be less hectic...

less hectic generally no, but if you get the right position it could be that way. There are times I put in 50-60 hrs. I am also reachable at all times.m I just wanted to point out that sometimes it's not an easier job or a job that could give you a better quality of life.

I have made such move when I first moved to my current company, and although the pay was great, the work was very monotonous...which was ok for me at the time as I was finishing up grad school and planning a weddingChat Icon But my main goal was to eventually move up in the company into a professional position which I did.

In your situation though, since you have a side gig going on, this kind of position might be suitable for you.

I have to agree with this. I worked for 10 years as an exec. assistant, and it was one of the most stressful jobs I've ever had, I worked insane hours and was always on call. I now work as a financial analyst and although stressful I'm not as stressed, and I enjoy the not being on call all the time.

I moved from Event Management to Application Support & Development to Executive Assistant. Now I'm an HR manager.

I didn't regret my decision at all. My attitude was if you want to pay me this much to get coffee & photocopy, I'm game.

It was a quality of life decision. Walking out of the door & not being on 24/7 is a great relief. We were planning on TTC'ing in a year. It worked out very well while I was pg & had kids.

Eventually, I did need more $ & took on more responsibilities. When they fired the HR manager, I threw my hat in the ring. I work more than 40 hours but it's time on the train, time at night after my kids are asleep - not time stuck in the office.

I'm home for a family dinner, bath & bedtime stories, which is worth more to me than a paycheck.

I went from an Exec Admin to a professional one once I moved over to my new company- Career-wise it was a big step for me, but for Quality of Life - Id go back to being an admin anyday.

My biggest lesson- Money is not always the most important thing. I rather be comfortable.

I did it to change careers 3.5 years ago. Best thing I ever did. i was promoted in 8 months to a manager position and I have since been promoted 2 other times since.

The admin job was boring, but a lot of work and it was a great opportunity to get to know people in the company and network.

I think it depends on the level of the Exec. you work for. If you work for an analyst or associate, then I can see leaving early and it being a 9 to 5 situation.

However, when you work for a Senior Exec., there is no such thing as a 40 hour work week. And, the pay is higher, but you are ALWAYS on call (at least from my experience and in my industry).

I work for a very senior person and my hrs are 8-6..usually my hrs extended into 7 or 8...it just depends on what the position is.

I agree with this. I was an exec to an owner of the company. While I always left at 5pm, I was on call all the time. Of course, they had to pay for my cell phone too.Chat Icon

Someone I knew was making about $90k - asst to the President.
