I'm watching a Hallmark movie called "a dog named Christmas" and they are promoting a sponser a dog for the holidays program. I wish I could do it but I'll be in PA...so I wanted to share. There are a few places in LI

Re: adopt a pet for the holidays

ohhh..i would love to do this! i checked all of the local shelters and saw a few that i would be interested in...my only concern is that i already have 2 dogs and i would want to make sure that the foster dog is in good health...i wouldn't want my other dogs catching anything,kwim?....i will have to discuss this w/dh.....i probably wouldn't want to give the pup back...but i guess that is why they offer this program in hopes of some finding permanent homes!

Maybe I'm the minority here but I don't agree with this.

If you want a dog then adopt it.

Basically you take a dog home for a few days and love it and spoil it then bring it back to the shelter?!

That's such a tease!

OMG, is that what this is about????I didnt' read the link but if so I also don't agree!!! And I don't like the promotion of getting pets for holidays, at all, like they are objects (such as a toy, etc)!!!

I don't think it's so bad to do it to give foster parents a break...but to take a dog out of a shelter and into your home, only to bring him back....that seems simply cruel!!!!Chat Icon

I honestly believe the point of the program is for people to adopt the dog. It's not about giving them as a gift (I too am against that) I think it's promoting adoption actually....I know if I chose to take a dog in for the holidays I would go in knowing I would never be able to return it to a cage...hopefully others see it as I do...

Agreed! I want to foster a dog/dogs (especially seniors) and i think this gives me the perfect opportunity to get started. They also said that this is a way for a foster family to get a break (such as if they are going away for the holidays)

i agree 2..this is how i was looking at it..i would like to foster dogs and this would b a good stepping stone/experience/etc. to see if i could even handle it...i didn't really look at it as a tease..but i could see that point too :(...i just want shelter pups to have any kind of love that they can get..even if it was only for a week Chat Icon

I totally agree. You get attached to the dog, feel guilty, and then you have a new pet!
