Adopting a dog
DH and I are going this week to meet a dog that someone is giving away. They posted an ad on craigslist to try and find her a home. Is there anything I should be concerned with in adopting this way? They state she is spayed and is current on all her shots. Are there any other questions I should ask? I have never adopted a dog this way. I have usually gone to a shelter. Thanks.

Re: Adopting a dog
I would ask for the vet's name where she got her shots and initial checkuo so you can talk to the vet to make sure it's all legit, and even ask for a copy of the record, and i would make the adoption pending an examination by your vet, as in if the dog is found to be unhealthy, you can give it back

Great idea! I will ask to speak to the vet!

Re: Adopting a dog
Do you know why they are getting rid of their dog? If you don't, I would ask. Is the dog a purebred? If yes, look up it's breed's characteristics so you can ask if any of them are being displayed. Ask how the dog is around children, strangers, being left alone. Are there any weird behaviros that they were concerned about?

Find out why they are getting rid of the dog. Behavior problems. Get proof of vaccinations, health history, proof of shots, what food it eats.
good luck

Re: Adopting a dog
pay close attention to the dog's behavior. does she shy away from you and your DH?, is she aggressive? does she know basic commeands? is she leash and house trained? does she exhibit signs of aggression?

Re: Adopting a dog
Thanks everyone. We are having the vet fax over the dog's records and will check it out. They say she is up to date on all her shots and licenses and take her for her regular vet appointments!
We are going to meet her tonight. The owners are moving into a condo and only want to take one dog with them and they have an older dog that they are taking. This one they saved a year ago.
I am excited! I am trying to get the picture of her to work so I can share!
