adopting another pet

For those who have more than 1 pet, how did the first pet react to the new pet. I have a cat and have been thinking about adopting another cat or dog. I am a little unsure about how my cat might react. Is it better to get another cat or a dog? I grew up always having a cat and dog and never saw a problem, but my dh is concerned. THanks.

we had 2 cats for 7 years before we brought home a dog. 1 cat took better to it than the other. There was a lot of hissing and hiding. But they all adjusted, they are best friends with the dog now. It took a good year to get to this point though.

I recently brought home another cat (my previous one died and I though my cat might be lonely), that took a while as well. Although if my cat could talk, I suspect he would tell me to get rid of her. Chat Icon

It takes a while, but I think majority of the time everyone adjusts.

We had two cats and then brought home a third. The first few days there was a lot of growling and hissing and some swatting, but after a week or two they were all fine w ith each other.

I found a couple of dogs we liked and then brought O'Malley there to interact with the dog. He didn't like some of those dogs at all and were scared of them. as much as i liked the other dogs, I had to say no. I then found Jameson and they got along "ok".. O'Malley isn't really interested in playing or anything but his tail was wagging and he was sniffing her and everything.

They say when the dog is a little older, definetely bring your other dog to meet it, otherwise when it comes to puppies, puppies love everyone.. it'll grow to love the other dog.
