Advice for bringing Newborn home...
Put a sign on the front door that says to wash hands before handliing the baby. Its amazing how many people touch dd upon seeing her and I have to be the crazy lady saying to wash their hands before touching her before I even say hello to the person. It just occurred to me to do this today (6 weeks later) and I'm printing up a sign now.
What brought this on is that DD had a fever in the Drs office, see link to my post below. Well, I thought about the half dozen visitors she had in the past week and how many of them touched her before I could interrupt them and tell them to wash their hands. (FYI this also applies in the hospital if the hospital allows baby in room during visiting hours)

No sign necessary. Keep bottles of hand santizer around and be sure to tell people to wash before touching anyone or anything. Shame on them. They should know better.

I COULD NOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE!!!! Also, when I was at the hospital, I made sure that the nurses came and took the baby into the nursery when I knew I was having visitors. I didn't want everyone touching/holding/kissing my newborn.

The ped told us hand sanitizer just isn't enough for the newly hatched. He said soap and water always before holding the baby.
ETA - he also said try to keep visitors to smaller groups. It's easier to watch what people are doing when there are less there.

really? that's interesting.
while I do agree that washing hands is best, I would think that hand sanitizer is a great thing to have all over. While most of our guests washed their hands (without being asked), there were a few that just did the few pumps of hand sanitizer.

I would also leave a bottle of Purell right on the table for people to use as well. I still have my bottle out 5 months later.

I thought the same thing. I always thought sanitizer would be "good enough".
And, if you've read any of my addiction posts you'd know I am the number one fan of Purell, more so the lovely scent it gives off. But any excuse to use it to get a whiff and I will

The thing is, people don't know better - especially if they haven't been around a baby in a while...

just make sure it's an alcohol based sanitizer, and not one with lots of creapy chemicals / antibiotics...
I would still prefer a good ol' soap and water wash.....
