Advice Needed - Injury at Daycare

DD (10 mos) is learning how to stand and apparently she "let go" at daycare, fell down and hit her eye (the area around it, not the eye itself) on the ground.

I got the message a couple of hours after they actually called me, and I spoke to the teacher. They said she's fine and it doesnt seem to be bothering her, but that she's definitely bruised.

My husband is FREAKING out and I'm trying to be the rational one...Of course, I'm really upset, but I wanted to reach out to you guys to see how you guys deal with stuff like this? I'm the last one to pick up at night so I'll be asking more details about what happened - where she was, where the teacher was, etc, but I dont know how to handle it. Do I need to call the pediatrician??

I know it's gonna happen now that she's getting more mobile, but any advice you guys can give me that great.

TIA

When DS started to stand and move around, I had an incident report to sign every day he was at daycare - he would fall or hit his head on something.

It is sad to see but, it's par for the course.

Re: Advice Needed - Injury at Daycare

I don't have kids in daycare, but honestly, they are going to get bumps and bruises. My MIL calls me if my kids scratch themselves or get a bump, but they could have done it in my presence too.

She'll be ok. I'd be more concerned if they hadn't called you to let you know.Chat Icon

DS fell so much when he was learning to stand. It happens. They did the right thing, they called you right away. I wouldn't worry too much. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Advice Needed - Injury at Daycare

I picked up DS(10months) from daycare last night and he had an egg on his head with a bruise. He hit his head on a table, it happened a half hour before i got there. They didnt call bc they knew i was gonna be there soon, I am totally fien with that. This stuff is going to happen, was I sad for DS yes, but i don't blame daycare.

Boys will be boys, I am sure there will be more bumps and bruises.

Re: Advice Needed - Injury at Daycare

This stuff happens whether you are at home or at day care.

DD chipped a tooth at daycare 2 years ago. She tripped and hit a table (rounded corner and all). I was devastated and upset, but it could have easily happened at home.

In fact, DS is starting to stand and he falls all the time. On our hard kitchen floors. It comes with the territory. I would question them to make sure you feel like the have the right supervision in place, but if you feel like they do all you can, then I think you need to let it go.

You can buy her a football helmet and make he wear it until she is more steadyChat Icon Chat Icon

I agree. It sounds as though they took the necessary steps to let you know. They should definitely give you something in writing, as there is mark on the face. But other than that, like the others said it is going to happen.

Re: Advice Needed - Injury at Daycare

this advice is coming from a former daycare teacher and director, kids as soon as they are up on their feet they fall, when they get older they will get into fights, get hurt on the playground, its just what happens. Trust me when I was a teacher I must have said stop running about 1 billion times a day because I knew someone was bound to get hurt, and when they did I felt awful but its part of being a child, especially with little ones just learning to explore they are always falling, and bumping themselves because they are so curious and so excited to show off their newest skill. If you feel like its more than just your average bump take your dc to the ped.

Re: Advice Needed - Injury at Daycare

Unfortunately, it will probably happen again. It sounds like the daycare followed the proper steps. It comes with the territory.

In fact today, DS got hurt at daycare. He was pushed off a balance beam (its low to the floor) by another child and has two rug burns on his lower back. They filled me in as to what happened and iced it down. This things happen. Chat Icon

Re: Advice Needed - Injury at Daycare

It's going to keep happening and although you're upset now, check back with us in a week or two and you'll laugh at your concern.... it's normal and as long as she's not truly hurt, there's nothing you can do! DH will also learn to just deal. Chat Icon Chat Icon It won't last forever!

Re: Advice Needed - Injury at Daycare

As a daycare mom, I think how they handle it is more important. I know my DC is going to fall, get hurt, scratched, brusied, etc. on occasion. What I am concerned about is did they ice it? Clean it? Call me and let me know promptly? If it's something that was an accident, and I feel they handled it appropriately, I roll with the punches. if I thought there was neglect or inattention, I would definitely speak up about it.

I have been in the room or on the playground on occasions where I saw one child bite amother. It happened so fast, I doubt any of the teachers could have prevented it. I think these things come with the territory sometimes.

Re: Advice Needed - Injury at Daycare

thanks all! you guys made me feel so much better!

When I picked up DD and she was crawling around the floor, "talking" away, and ALL smiles! obviously DH and I were much more bothered by it than she was! She's gonna have a shiner there, but i guess it'll just be one for the baby-book!

Thanks again!
