Advice needed on foster dog- UPDATED AGAIN!!!

We are fostering a dog in hopes to adopt her. We got her Monday night and she is just kinda sad and depressed, which they said is completely normal. Yesterday she didn't eat at all. Now today she is eating again but won't go out to go to the bathroom. I have brought her out constantly and she just stands there or tries to go back to the door. Her gas is so bad , I'm probably going to pass out. She did have one accident (pee) inside today when we were out for about an hour ago but that was hours ago and she has ate and drank a lot since then. Any suggestions.? I am giving her treats etc when we are outside.

UPDATE - I took her to the vet that the rescue uses. They know her and the rescue people well. I gave them a stool sample from Tuesday, since that's the last time she went. They will check for parasites. The vet said both her bowels and bladder weren't full, which I was surprised by , considering she has drank a lot of water and eaten 3 meals since then + treats.

He also thought the gas might be her anal glands. 1 was full so they emptied it but I am still being gassed, lol.

I'm slightly embarrassed b/c I heard them talking about me. "She calls to tell us she hasn't had a bowel movement and then she brings a stool sample in? She said she's been trying to reach the rescue all morning" I guess they found me to be annoying. I dunno.

UPDATED 1/3

A few things to update - she had a BM outside FINALLY!. So I'm bringing her outside constantly b/c she has been urinating in the house. I noticed she is only peeing a little bit at a time outside. I just brought her out maybe 40 minutes ago and she peed a little, but then , just now, peed a full amount in the house. So -with the luck she is having, I'm sure she also has a UTI or something.

Also GOOBSTER - I AM SO THANKFUL THAT YOU SUGGESTED GETTING HER TESTED FOR PARASITES!! She came back positive for whipworm and capillarid. I am really annoyed at the rescue. They have had her in a foster since April - how could they place her in my home with fleas and parasites? Esp knowing that I have small children and other pets!? I can't pick up her meds until tomorrow morning - the rescue is paying.
So - if I hadn't posted on this board and it hadn't been suggested, it never would have been detected. I would think that the rescue would have tested her before placing her with me. Or made sure she was getting preventatives.

Where did the dog come from?

I feel like rescue dogs often need more time to adjust. Chances are, she has been through a lot!

I would give her as much attention and affection as possible. Also....that's awesome that you're fostering her. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Advice needed on foster dog

Was she checked for worms? With bad gas like that, sounds like she absolutely has worms or a parasite. I would have that checked asap before your other pets get infested. And I don't care if they TELL you she is clean, I would not believe it if the dogs gas is that bad. I would bring a sample to my own vet asap to check.

OMG.

The paperwork they gave me said she was HW negative as per 12/23 bloodtest. I am going to have their vet fax it over to my vet today. I'm assuming a HW test only tests for HW so I'm not sure about the other parasites. BUT assuming she was in a foster with the rescue, I would hope she was UTD with all her preventatives, but you never know. I will call them and if anything take her to have the bloodwork done.

The first day and a half we had her I didn't notice any gas and she was going to the bathroom normally. But now she seems to be stressed/unsure of whats going on, which is normal. She didn't eat anything on day2. Yesterday was day 3 and she ate a ton but won't go to the bathroom. I am really hoping the gas is just because she has to go, and it's ready to come out but
she just refuses to go outside.

Are you giving her the same food she was eating before you started fostering her?

Switching up foods can definitely give them gas and make them picky eaters. As well as changing environments.

She probably just needs time to adjust.

I am trying to transition her over , so its a mixture of her old food and what I use. She did get into the cat food a few times because I forget to pick it up. Also - she has been getting dog treats that maybe she is not used to.

She is also drinking tons and tons of water. How could she not have gone to the bathroom??

She probably just needs time to adjust, but definitely have her checked by a vet. We just adopted a dog and she ended up having roundworm and another parasite. We fostered her for a week first and we just took her to the vet without dealing with the rescue organization.

HW is a blood test, not a stool test. The stool needs to be checked by your vet to make sure there are no parasites. There are many people who get pets from breeders, shelters, even pet stores and even though they come with papers saying they are "clean" of parasites (not HW, I mean fecal parasites), they wind up needing to be treated again. No blood test, just a simple stool sample to be checked.

Chat Icon I am sorry. You are only doing a good thing, how upsetting to feel like you think someone views you as annoying.Chat Icon I have felt that way, I can totally relate and it makes me very self conscious.

Did you tell them the sample was 2 days old? Usually my vet's office has me refrigerate the sample if it's going to be next day.

My female dog has had anal gland issues and it never created gas, ever. Just would annoy her, she would lick there a lot but never gas.

btw, does this vet seem reputable? I would hate for you to be told the wrong info, especially since they were making rude comments.Chat Icon

I hope they are reputable! I think they have been around forever. I did tell them it was two days old. I also think it was the receptionist talking about me, so I don't want to hold that against the Dr's. She isn't as gassy today but she also still hasn't had a BM since Tuesday.

Re: Advice needed on foster dog- UPDATE

Do you think the dog ate something that he shouldn't have and now it's stuck? Is the dog vomiting?

Do you also give wet food?

Re: Advice needed on foster dog- UPDATED AGAIN!!!

OMG Denise! So the rescue has LEFT this POOR dog with worms and parasites for HOW LONG????????? OMG. This poor baby must be so uncomfortable and in pain! And to take the chance with your family and pets is terrible! I just don't understand if this dog was getting the proper care, why wouldn't ANYONE think to test this dog for parasites and intestinal worms????

I am so upset for you. You try to do the right thing, save animals. You deal with people who are supposed to be doing the SAME, and you get put in a situation where the dog has fleas and worms? Was this dog in a shelter or someone's home?

That poor dog. Thankfully that dog found YOU.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Advice needed on foster dog- UPDATED AGAIN!!!

Wow! Just read your update! Typically, rescues make sure the dogs are Up to date on everything....just be careful with your other pets.....try to have your rescue poop in one spot in the yard and pick it up right away.
To be on the safe side, if i were in your shoes, I'd have my other pets tested

You are doing a great thing...hit a huge bump in the road but, you will persevere! Chat Icon

Thanks. I am so glad I have her and can nurse her back to health. She was in a foster with 8 other dogs and a bunch of cats. They said it's her personality - but she is so lethargic and mellow, its almost abnormal. She is approx. 8. I've only seen her run once. She sleeps almost all day. She doesn't want to play with anything. On her walk, I had to drag her most of the time. She really only wags her tail when she is walking towards us to be pet, she does love to be pet and be around us. But maybe she will be a different dog once she gets the meds and is more comfortable here.

Well, I spoke with the vet and these parasite are only passed from my pets coming in direct contact with her poop. I have been picking it up right away so I don't think I have to worry about it. Esp since she is going to start treatment tomorrow

Advice needed on foster dog- UPDATED AGAIN!!!

Do you mind me asking which rescue org you got her from? You can PM me if you want. Our dog came to us with parasites too and I was really annoyed with them about it. And they actually told us to hold off on taking her tot he vet when we first called them about her issues. We still went ahead and took her and moved forward with the adoption. I emailed them to tell them she had them and they blamed it on the foster who had her for a short time. My concern was more for the other pets there. I didn't want any other pets going to their new homes sick as well.
