affordable kitchen
So the co-op we are in contract on needs a kitchen makeover.... It's tiny.... 10x8.... and set up like a galley or a NYC kitchen.... we want to put new cabinets in and either granite or corian (since there's not that much space we figure it'll be worth the splurge)....
We just went to Home Depot Expo to get ideas and holy moly they were expensive!!! $800/linear foot of cabinets! The woman told us with counters and cabinets we were looking at 20k for MATERIALS alone....
then we left depressed and went to Home Depot where the same cabinets were $173/linear foot..... and the woman there said looking about $6,500....
When you redid your kitchens where did you go for affordable pricing? Is there any other place besides HD where you can buy the cabinets from and do the install yourselves? My brother's a contractor and DH and he and my dad can handle putting the cabinets in....
We don't want to go broke over this and honestly I thought we could do it for about 5k based on how small the space is....
We went to Consumers Kitchen and Bath and they were snotty to us and wouldn't do a design at 2:45 because they close at 4 on sundays.... lol...
Any suggestions?

For DIY in such a small kitchen I would try Ikea. We have not used them (yet ) but have seen the kitchens set up at the store. 1,000's of people are in there each week playing with the drawers and they have held up well. Ikea cabinets are rated very well by Conusmer reports and they are inexpensive
We discovered Ikea cabinets when researching cabinets for our house. Now that we have researched them a bit more we have decided to use Ikea to update our coop kitchen.
You can probably buy all the cabinets for a 10 x 8 kitchen for $4K at Ikea (white cabinets are a bit cheaper). You will have to put them together but from what we were told it's very easy.
Lots of links to Ikea kitchens are posted here
The Ikea design we had done for a 16 x 7 space.
With a new over the range microwave ($349 at Ikea), new sink & faucet ($249 at Ikea), about 18.5 sq ft of granite + assembly & installation of the cabinets (Ikea certified installer) we are looking at just under $6K. The Ikea applad and other white cabinets are a bit cheaper. We will probably go to Lowes for the microwave and faucet (found some we like far cheaper than Ikea).

We bought our cabinets from HD and having our contractor put them in. We have a 10 x 10 kitchen and have 23 cabinets and it cost $6,000.

Re: affordable kitchen
Is there any wholesale place that sells directly from the manufacturer?

Re: affordable kitchen
We redid our kitchen last year and it was expensive, but I am sure you can get cheaper quotes for cabinets in a kitchen of your size. I think ours is 12x12.5 and we put in really nice glazed cabinets with pull out drawers, self-closing drawers, etc...we gutted the entire kitchen and the cost wasn't cheap, but for just the cabinets and granite wasn't THAT much I don't think.
We went through Kitchens and Baths on Commack Rd in Commack. They had great prices and were really great to work with.

Re: affordable kitchen
If it's a co-op, you are not planning on stayng in it forever, it's small, you are not making major changes and you have family that can do the install (make sure this is ok with the co-op board, some only want contractors working in their buildings) then your best bet will probably be IKEA.

Re: affordable kitchen
Redoing a kitchen is expensive. Dh and I did the kitchen inour new coop for about 6500. We used Home Depot.
If you want to to do it yourself, look into a DIY workshop at Home Depot.

Re: affordable kitchen
Does a kitchen makeover in a co-op net the same increase in resale value as a kitchen makeover in a home?

Does a kitchen makeover in a co-op net the same increase in resale value as a kitchen makeover in a home?
Resale value on a kitchen makeover is largely dependent upon the materials used, use of space, quality of appliances and how it is consistent with the overall design of the house and comps for the neighborhood.
For example, the house I sold, the house was smaller, the kitchen smaller and it didn't demand granite counters. Many saw that house as a starter house so no one expected too many bells and whistles. The house I bought, a colonial on a bigger piece of land with formal living room/diningroom is in a completely different price range and therefore, higher end materials are more consistent with the house and the immediate neighborhood. Granite and slightly higher end appliances are expected.
It can largely depend upon what materials you use and the layout, however, I would caution against doing any home improvement just to try to get a 100% (or close) return on the project's cost in resale. That being said, most seller's see about an 80% return or more on the value of a new kitchen when they sell.
All of the above is based upon what my FIL has taught me. He has been a kitchen designer for decades.

Re: affordable kitchen
Ikea Ikea Ikea
We've renovated two kitchens in the last two years. The pic attached is our first kitchen and it cost about $7000. We bought the cabinets from Ikea for about $2,500.00. Butcher block counters from Ikea for $300. Hired an electrician for lighting for about $2,000.00. Floors we tiled ourselves and cost about $600. Backsplash we tiled ourselves and cost about $300. Brand new appliances from the Sears Outlet cost about $2000.
We just remodeled the kitchen from our new house and it cost about $12k. Again, Ikea cabinets and countertops - about $5,000.00 because it's a bigger kitchen. Tiled ourselves, which cost about $1000.00. New appliances for $2000.00 and the electrician cost $2500.
