AFP Screening test
Did anyone get this test done? It tests for Downs and Spina Bifida. Was it a blood test? TIA

Re: AFP Screening test
We did not opt to have it done, our personal decision due to false positives, I would not get an amnio, nor terminate the pg.
nothing is mandatory

I understand it is not mandatory, I was just asking about the test itself. My Mom told me she has downs on her side of the family and my MIL's brother was born with spina bifida and died at 2 months. That is why I want to have the test, I would not terminate the pregnancy either but I would rather know. Thanks for your responses girls

Re: AFP Screening test
I chose not to have it done. I am a very anxious ans stressed out person and I felt it would create additonal anxiety for me especially if there was a falso posisitve.

In that case, I might have taken the test. But I received some good advice, so I will pass that on to you too
Before you take the test, talk with DH, and go in with a plan. If the test comes back.....we will do....we won't do...Just so you know. Kinda like knowing the driving directions to a place haven't been to before.
Good luck and I hope everything is okay with the baby

Re: AFP Screening test
Since people have mentioned false positives, I just want to pass on a piece of advice. My doctor told me the test is most accurate at 17 weeks, even though it is often offered anywhere between 15 and 18 weeks.

Re: AFP Screening test
My dr. told me they do the test for Downs earlier on (somewhere in between 9-12 wks. I think she said) and the test is 98-99% accurate. The spina bifida test is done much later in the pregnancy.

This is the Ultra-Screen, which is a different test than the AFP. It is done earlier and my understanding is that it is a more accurate test for Down's because it combines an ultra-sound with a blood test. The AFP looks for both Down's and Spina Bifida.

I did the NT screening but not the AFP.

Re: AFP Screening test
I didnt do it due to knowing too many women who got false positives with it so we went straight with the amnio- well worth it- no guessing then!
