Age to start kindergarten??

Emma is in preschool now. In October she was invited to 2 5 year old birthday parties. Now when I started kindergarten I was 4 (November birthday, cut off is December 1). Is it the new trend to wait to put your kids in school so they are the oldest in the class??

In my school the cut off is Dec. 31. All of the kids in a grade are born in the same year. There are plenty of 4 year olds in Kindergarten every year. Those five year olds will probably be entering kindergarten in the fall.

Right but my question was since the kids were eligable to start kindergarten THIS year, why didn't they?

i'm sorry i missed the fact that the birthdays were in October.

Some of my students first enter school in first grade because Kindergarten is not mandatory. Maybe the parents plan to do that.

In my own experience, I've noticed that more and more parents are choosing to start their kids later in school or even hold them back a year to keep them at the "top" of their class.

Exactly what I think these parents are doing!!! I don't know if I want to be one of those parents or not.

Re: Age to start kindergarten??

In all honesty, I would rather see a child be held a year than pushed forward. All the children I work with that are pushed forward have a hard time relating to their classmates, while I see no effect on the ones held back.

When I was in school...my birthday was Dec 28, and the cut-off was Dec 1. My mom fought with the school to let us in, but they said no, so we were held back and always the oldest in our class.

It was nice when I was in 10th grade and got my drivers license and all my friends were jealous because they weren't old enough Chat Icon

See Emma has amazing skills for a 4 yr old. She is reading, working on math problems, knows all the things she should for kindergarten and even some for a 1st grade level (my mom taught 1st grade, she did her own eval on herChat Icon ) I dont know if I should keep her back and maybe she will be at the top of her class or let her be with the same aged kids.

Re: Age to start kindergarten??

You can be 5 from January on in my district so my son whose bday is in October will only be 4 when he starts Kindergarten.

Joseph is one of the youngest in his class (Sept birthday). He was already ahead of most of his peers in terms of reading, math, etc also. He's also been in "school" since he was 3 months old.

I would say as long as the emotional maturity is there, enroll them when they are scheduled.

I had a friend who held back her son because she didn't feel he was ready - also he is tiny for his age so his father was worried he would be picked on.Chat Icon

It does sound like Emma is going to qualify for Gifted & Talented. Be prepared. Depending on the school district, it can be tough to get her the services she needs.

I had a similar issue, My birthday is Dec 26 , my mom also fought but she got me in there when I was 4. I was always the youngest one in the class. once I got to 6th grade there were several kids that were left back , they were almost 2 years older than me!!

I don't see anything wrong with a parent holding their child back if they're 6-8 weeks away from the "cutoff". I would assume they did it because they felt their child wasn't ready before thinking they want their child to be at the "top" of their class. Do people really do that at the kindergarten level? On another note... Barbara - would you mind elaborating on the "Gifted and Talented" program?

We just received a notice that our school district sent to all Kindergarten parents. It's a questionaire to see if you feel your child would qualify for G&T. We filled it out - most of the questions for Joseph were rated on the high end (I'm sure many parents feel that way about their kids too - not saying he's a genius). After they get the evaluation, they're going to do testing for those kids.

If he gets accepted, it's a special program where they are pulled out of class in the 1st grade & given extra work to keep their interest up. What is chalkd up to a behavioral problems are sometimes actually boredom in the classroom.

My sister's friend had her son tested for every kind of behavioral disorder in Kindgergarten. When they did the test, he scored extremely high & with an IQ of over 140. Now he's doing enrichment programs, field trips, science courses, etc. Behaviorally he's done a complete turn around. He is still in his regular class because emotionally he is still his chronological age. The school is challenging him in the areas he needs.

Re: Age to start kindergarten??

I think I posted about this a few months ago. I wasnt aware of it either until a few moms were talking at a playgroup about holding their kids back to give them the edge to be at the top of their class.. I thought that was a bit insane personally. John anthony could have started kindergarten at 3 and been at the top of the class Chat Icon Chat Icon He speaks like a 6yr old, spells, reads, math, etc etc. knew all the planets before he turned 2 Chat Icon His teachers at school (and he only goes 2 days) both this year and last year have always told me he stood out in class in conversations, etc. (well not phsyically because hes such the little shrimp Chat Icon Chat Icon) Im not just bragging about my kid, because I will just as well say that Nicholas is much more "average" as far as many areas of development (speech, comprehension, etc.) we see a big difference in them.

JA is born in Oct. I cant imagine holding him back for any reason at all. I didnt even know this was an option until I was mixed into that conversation..
Yes, there are reasons that moms do it, and I respect that, but I just dont agree with it, ESP if its for making them at the top of the class.? seemed a bit selfish and not the right reason to me Chat Icon
He's absolutely ready to start kindergarten, whether he's the top of the class or not, that's not the goal.

Thats great Barbara! YOur district has a great G&T program Chat Icon From the stories we've heard, Im sure Joseph will be the class leader Chat Icon

My sister got a similar type letter (she's in Queens) her daugher's in kindergarten also, reading 3rd gr level, very bright, but although she's in a great district, they dont have a gifted program within the school. and my sis and BIL were debating whether to pursue it, theyre looking at the pros and cons (too much pressure on the kids) etc.

I think my district starts in 3rd grade.

Kathy, I'll respond what I know about the gifted and talented programs. Each district calls it something different. Ive also heard Challenge&Discovery, etc.
They have different programs, kids are pulled out of class for lessons within the gifted program, they give them projects which require higher level thinking, and very challenging projects. I dont know too much about it to be more specific, sorry Chat Icon

Thanks Anna! Chat Icon I keep worrying that Sean will be "bored" in K. I think the only reason he's such a "good" boy in preschool is because he's the teacher's "helper". Chat Icon

I would tell them to look into it - even if they needed to lean on the school district. At one point, being in a class that is "dumbed down" will affect her learning. <<----that of course being the relevant phrase when talking to those principals/Board of Ed about the programs they need to offer.
