Re: Aggravating phone conversation with NYS tax dept.
FYI, it doesn't matter if you put cash or a check in the envelope, your church will keep a record if you use donation envelopes. Usually, each one has a specific number assigned to it (corresponding to you) and they keep records for tax purposes. My parents and I go to different churches and we both get statements every year. If you've been donating in the envelopes, ask your church for a statement of what you've donated. That will hopefully at least help out on one item.
You can prove that NYPD has to buy their own supplies, so that shouldn't be an issue either. Obviously, you can also prove your mortgage information.
Sorry you're going through this. Many times, they randomly select people to audit. I doubt they truly think you're trying to cheat or anything. I know it must be really frustrating, though. Do you have an accountant? I'd talk to one rather than handling this yourself.
Good luck!!

I'm being audited right now..it blows!
I'm about to hire another accountant..
they audited every line item, every deduction and wanted full explanations on everything. I had to write a novel and we are still not done..this was the IRS...the state hasn't had a crack at me yet.
I'm afraid to file for 2007 although I will..doing the same thing I always do...every year for the past 20 years.
