Ahhh my Dad is driving me nuts...soy-based formula...
I took DD to the Dr. this morning b/c of a rash on her body that has been getting worse. Well, it turns out it is not a rash, it is just extremely dry skin. The Dr. gave me samples of Enfamil Prosobee formula b/c she said that DD might have a cow's milk protein allergy.
Well, I mentioned it to my google-friendly Dad and he wrote me an email telling me that he suggests I do NOT give DD any soy based formula based on the following article: article
Have any of you heard of problems associated with soy formula? Now I'm scared to switch DD over. I swear...it's always something....such a fine line between doing your research and staying off the internet at the same time...I don't know what to do!! DD is currently on Enfamil Lipil.

DD was on Prosobee (by our own switching before her 1st visit to the Dr) and she is FINE.

I've never heard of any problems associated with soy formula. Some babies have to have soy due to allergies...there is really no other choice if your child is allergic to milk based products.

I didnt' want to provide my email, so I didn't read the article, but there are a lot of sites out there with info. I like the Food Allergy Network (foodallergy.org) and the food allergy board on babycenter for specific questions.
My ped said that about 50% of kids that have milk protein allergy to cow's milk also have it to soy milk. Our ped had us try Nutramigen which has the proteins pre-digested for the baby. Unfortunately that didn't work for us, so we had to go to an amino acid based formula.
I have heard of concerns with soy, but they didn't seem as severe to me as my son's reactions to dairy.

My dd is on prosobee and she is doing fine. She also had a small skin rash and that's why we had to change her formula to soy. The only problem I have is that she sometimes is constipated and I have to give her some prune juice.

Re: Ahhh my Dad is driving me nuts...soy-based formula...
I was on soy formula when I was a baby and I am fine and have no lasting effects from it at all.
There is also Gentlease and Nutramgin, which are milk based, but with partially or totally broken down milk protein (Nutramgin is also hypo allergenic). You could ask your ped about those as well.
But your ped is a doctor and no offense, your father is not. Google is a great tool, but not all of the time. I would listen to what the doctor has to say.

Re: Ahhh my Dad is driving me nuts...soy-based formula...
I just did some quick research myself, and found all references to the manganese reference pointing to one study by one group. The FDA mentions nothing about excess manganese. The American Association of Pediatrics mentions nothing about hazardous levels of manganese.
WebMD has the following info: http://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/news/20021009/adhd-caused-by-infant-formulas
There is no official Recommended Daily Allowance for manganese, but the suggested daily "adequate intake" is 0.3 mg for infants aged 0-6 months, and 0.6 mg for those aged 7-12 months. A single 5-ounce serving of Isomil, the most popular soy-based formula, contains 0.025 mg. Most babies consume four to 10 servings per day, which falls well within the suggested intake.
Research on the web is only good if you know how to use the data you've gathered.
Also, I never blindly trust MDs. Yes, they are well educated, and are good at their job, but there is no way for them to know everything about everything. It's usually good to do additional research, but it's also important to do proper research....
