Re: Air Purifiers

We have the Ionic Breeze & love it. It helps with DH's allergies (less sneezing & watery eyes) & even keeps him from snoring.

Re: Air Purifiers

Consumer Reports put out an article recently that says several agencies besides themselves are finding that ionized air may not be healthy, and the filter-type purifiers are safer and better.
It's the ozone that these things produce that is the potential health problem. Some produce more than others.

We wouldn't want to be in customer support at The Sharper Image these days. With the company's lawsuit against Consumer Reports thrown out by the courts, the purveyor of overpriced and uninspired gear now faces new charges related to the same product that led to the suit in the first place: its Ionic Breeze air purifiers. And this time, it's not just that the Breeze doesn't work, as CR charged in 2003. The magazine's latest study charges that the units actually make air quality worse, by releasing excess ozone into the air — something that can cause serious respiratory problems, especially for asthmatics or other people with breathing concerns (who, not incidentally, are among the biggest purchasers of air purifiers). Not surprisingly, Sharper Image's stock has plummeted, and it released a statement calling the report "an unfair assault." Meanwhile, we imagine the company is desperately retooling to come up with another hit product, and that we'll see their ever-popular electric nose-hair trimmer on the cover of their next catalog.

WebMD info on Ozone and Ionizing air purifiers:
http://www.webmd.com/news/20060511/ozone-generators-home-smog
Ozone is great in the upper atmosphere, where it protects the Earth from harmful radiation. Ground-level ozone, however, isn't our friend. According to the American Lung Association, ozone exposure may lead to premature death, shortness of breath, chest pain when inhaling deeply, and wheezing and coughing. High ozone levels irritate the lung and make asthma worse.

If you opt for an Ionizing air purifier, make sure it doesn't produce much ozone.

Not all Ionizing purifiers create ozone, but you definitely need to look into whichever ones you are thinking of, if you go that route.

I don't know about the Ionic Breeze but we had gotten the air purifier from Oreck and returned it after a few days...the machine was giving off this weird smell...I opt not to get one for now until they develop something safe.

Re: Air Purifiers

Sharper Image has a whole list of reasons why the ionic breeze is good even though it does not perofmr well on tests. My doctor said HEPA is much better and so I've stck with that. Honeywell makes great ones. I would reccomend one witha sensor that tells you when to change the filter. I hate the guesswork.
