Alexa Ray Joel Speaks Out About "Heartbreak-Related Depression"
It sounds like Alexa Ray Joel is starting to feel better. She posted a note on her Facebook page thanking fans for their support after her hospitalization last month. She wrote about her plans to educate herself and speak out about "heart-break related depression."
"[I want to] to help young girls with something I feel I know a GREAT deal about: Heartbreak-Related Depression. Although it does not get much attention in our society, it is a very serious and painful condition that often gets 'swept under the carpet.' I hope to bring this topic more to light"
She even said she wants to go back to school and study psychology. I'm not sure if suffering after a heartbreak is all that new, but I'm glad to see Alexa Ray trying to heal herself after a difficult time.
Hopefully 2010 will be a great year for her!

Re: Alexa Ray Joel Speaks Out About "Heartbreak-Related Depression"
I'm not sure what to think about this. I don't think the pain of heartbreak is "swept under the rug" in our culture. I can't turn on the radio without hearing at least one song that focuses on the pain of a breakup. Every girl (and guy) has gone through it, and we all survive. Honestly, attempting suicide after a break up is not "typical" (at least for a woman in her mid 20's as opposed to a teenager), and I would think there were other, underlying issues in her life that contributed to her suicide attempt. I hope she is also dealing with those issues (if they do exist).
I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way...please don't flame me. I don't mean to sound insensitive. I am really happy she is feeling better and wants to help other people - in whatever capacity she feels comfortable. I hope she stays healthy and happy. She seems like such a sweet girl.

ITA that she probably had an underlying condition or a genetic predisposition to depression. The breakup was the catalyst. Thank goodness she got the help she needed and is on the road to recovery.
