Allergic to medical tape??
I was in the hospital last week and had IV's and blood drawn while I was there. It seems that in any spot I had medical tape on my arm, I am getting redness and defined marks from the tape (5+ days later). It doesn't itch much, but it turned bright red when I was in the sun yesterday...? Am I "allergic" to the medical tape, or is it some sort of weird reaction?
I remember this happening when I was in the hospital with DD. My back was covered in red spots (and itchy) from where they taped the epidural.
What can I do to avoid this

Re: Allergic to medical tape??
I've had this happen to me a few times (and I'm TTC dealing w/ IF so there are weeks that I'm getting blood taken almost every, if not every day). I've found that there's nothing you can do about it and unfortunately only time seems to help- it should go away on its own. I would take a washcloth and wash your arms well with soap and water. HTH!

Re: Allergic to medical tape??
ask for them to use paper tape if they have it on you instead. Its still medical tape but its more of a paper consitance than the plastic kind they used on you. It could also be the glue thats on the tape that your allergic too.

Yes, I'm allergic to the adhesive on medical tape too. I get the same marks you did.

Re: Allergic to medical tape??
I am HIGHLY allergic to medical tape and adhesives too. Even from band-aids. All the surgeries I've had, I've gone home with WELTS on my chest from the cardiac electrode adhesives too. The only thing that I can suggest is to bring baby oil with you and ask the nurse to apply baby oil to the skin with a 2x2 gauze while she's peeling up the tape. Tega-derms, however, for some reason don't react with the skin as badly as the actual tape does. Also, if they have "paper tape".
Hope that helps!!

I have had that a few times I don't think it is an allergy just that your skin is irritated from the tape which does leave marks.

Re: Allergic to medical tape??
Yes, I had this happen when I had my c-section with DS, except I had blisters and badly cut skin. The pain was horrible. Use milk of magnesia to heal it faster. If you have a tape allergy just tell your dr. They will use a different one next time.

Re: Allergic to medical tape??
I have the exact same thing. My file at Stony Brook Medical Center has a notation that I have an allergy to adhesives. They have used something different from the normal adhesive ever since I got my file marked. They seem to take it really seriously and even if I forget to mention it, they do not use adhesive on me. Like another poster here, I also had a major problem with cardiac electrodes. I do not think there is anything they can do to prevent that.

I get those same marks...and very bad too. I can only use Nexcare bandaids. It sometimes happens but rarely with them. I do have a latex/rubber allergy so I wonder if there is a correlation.

I get the same thing....from pretty much all medical tape and band-aids. I was a mess after I had DS! I ask them to use paper tape whenever possible -- it doesn't cause the bad reaction usually.

One doctor told me that there is a connection. I react to bandage tape and elastics but I have not noticed a problem with other latex.

Re: Allergic to medical tape??
looks like it...I have the same reaction...the tape from my Epi. gave me a rash on my back, same with the tape from the IV in my arm from having DD. I also cant use the fabric bad aids or certain kinds of itching cream...and the tape they used to wrap you at my physio place couldn't use it...
