allergy testing a 1 year old???

ds has to get tested for a food allergy (egg) soon.

how does the dr. take the test (blood prick, viles of blood, etc.)?

do they test for all the allergies or just the one you suspect?

how bad was it for your dc?

how soon do you get the results?

tia!

Re: allergy testing a 1 year old???

We have not experienced it, but I did mention to the Ped at Troy's last visit about the reaction he had at niece's bday party in Jan. He said when Troy goes for his 1 yr blood test (required by law to test for lead), he said he can also request to test for specific potential allergies, like egg and butter.

This lead me to believe (obviously) that it's a blood test. That's all I know. Sorry Ia m not much help!

I have seen kids (different ages) get blood drawn while waiting during my two 3 hour glucose tests at Quest. It's not fun on the kid, parent or person taking the blood.

When the time comes, wherever you get the blood drawn, ask for someone who is good with kids, hopefully that will help.

I just posted on another thread, but when my DS was tested he only had the blood test. They test for everything all at once. We only suspected dairy and eggs, but they also tested for a whole bunch of other things. They took a few vials of blood, but we did it at the same time as other blood work. There's also the skin test, but my DS has never had that.

DD had the same test. We knew she had a dairy allergy but also discovered she was allergic to peanuts because she was tested for many different things.

Our pediatrician had a RAST allergy panel done first. We had to take him to a lab and they took a few vials of blood and ran the test for the big food and environmental allergies. When the results came back severe to milk, we saw an allergist who did the skin test in her office. She didn't want to see us before the RAST panel was done and we faxed her the results.

I took both my kids to Dr. Mayer in Smithtown - he is fabulous. They do a skin test first to see if there is any reactions. If there is then you take them for a blood test to see how bad the allergy is. I took Ella when she was 10 months and Jake when he was 3 years old.

when my sone was 8 months old they did a RAST test - drew blood at Quest. It was fine. Then the allergist did a follow up skin patch test where they prick them with a bunch of tiny needles all at once that have the allergen on them. That's really not so bad. The hard part is keeping them from scratching their backs when they get hives from the test. My son has blood and skin tests every year and they really are not too bad...probably worse for Mommy!! The allergist did a skin prick test in his office.
He did everything I suspected and the most common food allergies.

We did blood at Lab Corp. You can get results in 4-5 days but we usually just go over them at the next appt (usually 3 weeks after the skin prick).

Taking blood is hard for my DD but she gets stickers afterwards so it helps.

We go every 6 months for skin and blood work, but my DD's allergies are pretty bad so that may be why.

At 9 months they took blood when he was in the hospital to test. They took 4 vials and the doc didn't want to take anymore, so he only checked off chekcing for certain things and not a whole panel. It had dog, cat, pollen, ragweed, dust, milk, egg, peanut and a couple others. I think we got the results 2 weeks later.

We had to take DD to a lab and it was a couple of vials. She did so-so....as well as could be expected. She always cries when strangers touch her so it was no shock to me. She had a little bruise afterwards.

We went to a lab and they took vials of blood. They tested for allergies to many things and he came up allergic to only eggs. Then we gave him peanut butter and he broke out in a rash, so be careful even after you get the results.
