Re: Alopecia
My best friends sister does. It started when she was about 3 yrs old. Her entire head of hair fell out in les sthen a week. It was sad and scary.
Theres more then one kind...One usually starts very early...Like hers and is the most common..... and the other In post menopausal women due to lack of hormones..
Thats all I know.

Re: Alopecia
I have it - I have had it as long as I can remember. I lose my hair in small patches - I have never lost all my hair. I get cortizone (sp?) shots every 4-6 weeks in the bald area and the hair grow back. The doctor thinks mine is caused by stressed or that stress aggravates it. like the pp said - there are different forms - I knew a guy my mom worked with who lost all his hair including his eyebrows and eyelashes.
HTH! ANy questions - please ask!! I will try to help as much as I can

Re: Alopecia
my mom was just recently diagnosed with it. she has lost hair in a few spots, but then it stopped. she went to a dermatologist and received some sort of shot to help. it has stopped for now.
she went to a Dr. Daly in Garden City who she was very happy with.

Re: Alopecia
My mother had it, her entire head of hair thinned to the point where you could see her scalp. She wore wigs and believe she still does but I don't know for sure cause she has not been in my life for 20 years.
I did a lot of research and Alopecia is not hereditary!

Re: Alopecia
Thanks everyone
It's not on my head (yet?), but I lost half of my eyelashes on one eye
I was hoping that maybe I just rubbed it the wrong way but the dermotologist said it was alopecia..
It does look like its starting to grow back, but I'm not positive...

Re: Alopecia
I have alopecia areata- or so my dr says. I noticed a small area of small hairs under my hair when my hairdresser was doing my highlights. I never noticed on my own. This was in april. then I got my hair JHs in july and noticed it hadnt grown in much thats when I went to the derm and he said alopeica areata. so far I havent noticed anymore spots, im being treating with a cream and some shots for the one patch which I dont really think is doing much. my derm was like," its not a big deal dont worry about it"- but to me if it continues its a big deal. I like my hair and Id like to keep it...
