Alrighty, this is bothering me-regarding weapons in schools...
There is a school out here that made the news yest4erday b/c a sophomore stabbed a freshman with a switchblade type knife...
THey were saying on the news last night that it was a disagreement of some sort that starteed last school year...
Anyways...a co-worker's son is a freshman at this school, so today I said waht the heck is going on in schools, etc...
She said her son called her after school & told her about it and she said she felt like she was going to be sick. I was saying how sad it is that kids can bring knives, etc to school b/c there is no metal detectors, etc...
And she says.."Well I did not speak to him about it, I felt like he was fine about it, and I just told him to make sure he says hi and smiles & is friendly to everyone he comes across at school"
I was You did not talk to him about it? It was a kid in his class! He saw it! He should be talked to about this and all weapons...schools are no longer safe! Telling your kid to smile & be nice is not going to defend him!
I fear having kids b/c of the bad state of certain things now...and she was just sooo blaze' about it...
Thanks for letting me get this off my chest..it has beebn bothering me since our conversation

Re: Alrighty, this is bothering me-regarding weapons in schools...
This is something I don't like to think about, but at the same time, as a teacher, I am always alert. And I don't think that "smiling and being nice" is going to help if you're talking about a mentally ill child. Last year I had a student who made me very nervous- he had a drug problem, was very unpredictable and really believed that the teachers were making up lies about him and threatening him (none of these things happened.)
Part of the problem with this child was that his own parents were afraid of him. I have a feeling that this is not uncommon today; I once had another student and I had a feeling that he used to beat his mother, from the way she'd cower in his presence.

I agree 100%. I was a HS counselor/teacher and I remember clearly 2 students in particular who we believed were mentally ill, but the parents were totally in denial.
One of the students really scared me and I told administrators that I was nervous that he would come to school and do something scary. He was seeing a personal counselor at school, but his parents refused to seek outside help for him. I constantly worried not only for him, but for the other students and faculty & staff at the school.
There is usually a whole lot of stuff going on in these situations that doesn't come out in the media.
