Alternative to an iPod Suggestions Needed!!!
So I've had my iPod now for a little over 2 years and it crapped out the other week.
This is my second iPod in a little over three years...Same thing happened to the first - it just died.
I'm getting a bit fed up and dealing with the Apple store is no treat so I was thinking of getting a different mp3 player but don't know whats out there and if there is anything better on the market for that matter.
Could anyone recommed something?
Thanks!

Re: Alternative to an iPod Suggestions Needed!!!
SanDisc has players called Sansas, and they are pretty good as an alternate to iPod---they are usually priced pretty well.
Microsoft's mp3 player is called Zune--they are comprable to iPods in their size and screen.
Samsung has some mp3 players also - but i don't know much about them.
Insignia is another mp3 player maker.

Re: Alternative to an iPod Suggestions Needed!!!
I know nothing about mp3 players. And I had my Ipod mini got 3 years - no problem. Recently upgraded to the Ipod Nano - still no problem.
But I think I've been lucky.
Sorry to hear yours crapped out for a second time. I've had a few friends with the same issue - it just died. But lucky for them it happened within the first year so Apple replaced it no problem.

Be careful- I don't think that the songs you purchased through ITunes will work on other Mp3 players. I would look into that.

they should work--you might just have find your iTunes music that you've purchased folder on your computer and add the songs manually to the new mp3 player thru whatever software it uses.

Re: Alternative to an iPod Suggestions Needed!!!
Sorry what I meant was I don't know of any other player that can play Itunes' Protected AAC file type. Here's an Article
You could always burn them to cd then import them back in but that is a real PITA.

Last time I tried to burn my iTunes purchases to a CD it wouldn't let me!!
Anyway, my DH has an iRiver and I believe he did tons of research before purchasing.

wow, you're right. most of the players on the market can't play the iTunes formatted music! iTunes purchases are AAC protected....i've only found like 2 or 3 mp3 players that plays AAC files--but it doesn't say it can play AAC protected--only fellow iPods can. that sux!

If you burn them to CD they have to be burned in Audio format.

Yeah, I don't know what happened - I was always able to burn CD's of songs I *purchased* through iTunes. Then I specifically bought/downloaded a ton of songs my mom asked me for just so I could burn for her (and I didn't mind having some of them for my iPod) and after I moved them to a playlist and went to burn a CD, it gave me an error saying I was not allowed.
So out of annoyance/frustration, I haven't tried again (in case I just did something wrong or it was a temporary glitch).
ETA: Sorry for the partial hijack!

If you feel like trying it again- Go to Edit --> Preferences Click on the Advanced tab in there click on the Burning tab Make sure "Audio CD" is selected. ITunes songs won't burn anyother way.

Thanks! I'll try it! I know when this happened it had recently updated to a new version of iTunes, so maybe it changed my preferences I never knew I had!!

We have a Sansa mp3 player. We've been able to download (edt: and play) radio podcasts from iTunes. I can't testify to downloading songs from iTunes, though.

Thank you all for the responses, I thinking of checking out the zune. Do you know if they work with iTunes?
I have about 2K songs that I would prefer to not have to re-download.

Nope it wouldn't matter then. Where did you purchase them through? I think Zune has some other restrictions. If they are all from CD's that shouldn't be a problem at all.

Re: Alternative to an iPod Suggestions Needed!!!
remember, old school hard drives (generation 1 - 5 ) is pretty much a portable hard drive. They have moving parts that can break. If you are ruff and tuff and bang it, it will break.
New generation Ipod (touch) utlizes flash memory (like a usb jump drive)
As for as alternatives, do you need a screen? do you need a ton of space?
many options...

It's one of the originals to come out. I got it the year they came out.
I do have about 2K songs, no video. I like the screen b/c I like to see what's playing so that I can scroll through if I'm looking for a particular song.
Any feelings on the Zune? iTunes is what houses all my music on my computer, but I never downloaded anything from iTunes. All my music is from CDs or free from Limewire. I know, I know... I shouldn't be downloading free music from Limewire, but that's a whole other thread!!
At any rate, will I have trouble transferring over my music to a new MP3 player?

Yeah...the old generation is sensative...
No, Itunes is just a program. Prehaps it didn't like some of the songs and may of converted to its MP4 format but I believe this is a way to fix that.
The Zune was suppose to be the IPOD killer but it never caught on because everybody already had IPODS.... Zune can be had for about 100+ bucks and should do exactly what the IPOD does and more...
If you use the Zune, you be useing Windows Player 11 which i find to be better then Itunes ...
