Always, ALWAYS get a second opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!
My central air does NOT need to be replaced!!!!!
We got another opinion this morning and it's only a frayed wire!!!! Not a burnt out compressor like the last a/c guy thought!!!
It's working fine now!!
I almost KISSED the a/c guy!!! 
I feel like I just hit lotto.  I'm soooo happy!!!

wow, that is a good home ownership lesson... thanks...
now why was that wire frayed? Did something munch on it? Maybe you have to squirrel / rabbit proof your AC unit a bit?
