Am I crazy if I let DH go on an overseas trip (10+ hr flight) when I am 37 weeks pregnant?
A few weeks ago I posted that DH had the opportunity to go on a week trip overseas with one of the most highly regarded and well known specialists in his field. It would be a great honor for DH and give him the opportunity to really get to know this guy, which could be very helpful in his career in the future. At the time, DH and I agreed he would not go. It's come up again and now we are discussing it and I am leaning towards letting DH go.
It will be in the beginning of March, 3 weeks before my due date. We also booked DS's 2nd birthday party for the first week in March so if DH goes on this trip, he'd miss DS's 2nd birthday party.
DH would basically be 10+ hours away by flight when I am 37 weeks pregnant.
I am crazy for letting him go if he goes, right?
I made the mistake of telling my mom and she said he should definitely go! I couldn't believe my ears. She thinks missing a bday party is no big deal and that I will most likely not deliver when DH is gone. She thinks career is more important than potentially missing the birth of a child?!?!?!?!?

How long is the trip?
If he does go, I would have a back-up incase you have early contractions, whether it's your mom, BFF, or someone you feel close to and comfortable being with you at the hospital.

I don't think you're crazy...like I said before in your original post...if it helps you guys out in the long run, he should go for it.

It would be a week trip, probably 9 days including travel time.
My mom would be around.
I had posted this a few weeks ago but I don't think I'd want anyone going into the delivery room that isn't DH. I'm pretty private when it comes to my body. I don't think I'd want a friend or family member with me. If by chance I go into labor, I have a feeling I'd be delivering by myself.

it sounds like you already know how you feel. everyone is going to have different opinions on this.
if it were me, there's no "letting him go". I can tell him how I feel about it but he has to decide if he thinks it's worth missing a birthday party (which honestly I wouldn't be THAT upset over) or the birth of his child (yes, that would bother me more). He has to make the decision. But I honestly don't think it would bother me. especially if it's good for his career in the long run I think it's important that he goes. But that's JMO.

What's wrong with your mom? I'm sure if you went into labor your DH would be on the first flight home.

Crazy ? No....
But to me there is only one birth of a child and nothing trumps that in my eyes, so if it were me or DH there would be no option...he would not go.. Also , with my type of luck, the baby "would" be born while he were away...The birthday party I would be able to see past ( or would re-schedule if I feasibly "could")
That being said, its a very personal decision that only you and DH can make and you should not feel crazy for thinking it through

ITA... I'm not in your shoes so I'm sure it's a tough decision. If he can manage to get a flight just incase and you're mom is around then I think I'd be ok with it. I'm private too, but so close with my mom that if DH wasn't there then I'd want my mom with me

I know last minute flights get to be a lot of $$ but maybe you could schedule a doc visit the day before he is set to go. If there is no progress then he goes, if the doctor suspects it might be sooner, he stays.

I agree, I said it in the original post. I think your husband is a medical fellow (my husband is a resident). Although, not completely the same his interviews for fellowship take place during my last 4 weeks, he has to travel to almost all of them the farthest is Texas. It's not an ideal time, but I would be comfortable with my mom or sister there if my husband can't be there. It's a hard choice to make and you have to do whats best for you guys if this would help in the long run. If it was me, I'd say ok.

I would be 100% ok with it if it was domestic trips. You can fly back pretty quickly and there are usually a lot of flights.
When I went into labor with DS, I delivered in 12 hours. If DH tried to book a flight that day, with international airport time and 10+ hours on just the plane,it would be unlikely that he could make it back in time.

This is my feeling as well. And if I remember correctly didnt you say you delivered early last time? Would you be OK with not having DH there when you gave birth?

I delivered 1 week early.
I have no signs now of going early but I'm only 32.5 weeks pregnant.
I hate this. I just know I'll feel so guilty if we are just hanging out and I'm nowhere near going into labor at 37 weeks and DH didn't go.

I think my mom truly thinks I won't go into labor until later. She thinks the chance is small and worth the risk of not having DH around at 37 weeks.

What are your DH's thoughts...I mean does he feel he should go, or not, why etc

DH is not a talk about his feelings type guy.
I know he WANTS to go and will probably regret not going if he does not go.
However, he is saying that he won't go but you can tell he wants to go. If he really was ok with not going, he would not keep bringing it up. I think he is torn, just like me.
I think it is up to me. If I really urge him to go, he will go. If I say I want him to stay, he will stay.

I am selfish and my DH travels for a living. I would not let him go. I know that he would regret it more if he missed the birth of our child.
