Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
DH will have to go back to work within 1 or 2 days of the baby and I for the most part will be taking full care of the baby. I am just worried about the pain after labor or c-section. Is it doable without a nurse or helper? I guess our parents can help after work.

My friend did it after a c-section. People stopped by and helped here and there. She preferred to do it on her own.

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
I think it depends on how you handle stress and how good your baby is. Some people are fine with it. Others who get stressed out easily may not handle it so well. I think the key is to remain calm even when you're stressed. I'm sure that's easier said than done though.

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
Many women do it without a baby nurse. We cannot afford to get one so our families will be helping out to the extent possible.

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
Totally doable. Do you have any family that can come in and relieve you at all during the day for a nap? I personally no matter how tired I was didn't want any else taking care of my baby. I was so wrapped up in her I couldn't imagine someone I didn't know feeding her, changing her, bathing her, etc. I think you'll be just fine.

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
Are you planning on nursing? I had a baby nurse who helped me IMMENSLY when it came to nursing. I had a rediculous milk supply and I really credit it to her - she was so helpful. It's totally doable without a nurse - but if you could affored one for even a few days I think it is extremely helpful.

I never heard of having a baby nurse, don't know anyone who's had one. It's doable without one. If you have people in your life who will help - take it! If you have the option of relaxing or doing housework while the baby is napping - definitely relax!

Unless it is paid for 100% by insurance, there is no way we would ever be able to afford a nurse!!!

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
There are some people at work who keep telling me I HAVE TO have one and especially since I am having twins.
One guy even said "They are so helpful even with little things like organizing the changing table"
Ummmm... if one cannot organize a changing table, how will you parent?
No way, I went to way too much to have these babies, I am not hading them over, no matter how sleep deprived I am, to a complete stranger.
My family comes from peasant stock, we do things ourselves. No baby nurse for us.

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
I'm not planning to have one. I'm one of those ridiculously stubborn people who likes to do things without help. Though if I had family nearby, I'd certainly accept the help! But they're out of town. I am hoping that the baby comes right before DH goes on spring break so that he will be home with me and the baby for a stretch.
ETA: If you do decide to have one, check her credentials carefully. It seems that it does not take much to call oneself a baby nurse- there was a woman in Manhattan whose 5 day old baby was shaken so badly by a baby nurse that she suffered permanent damage. That's an extreme and rare case, but it's something to be aware of.

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
I just posted something similar on the parenting board. My parents actually offered to get me a baby nurse for a week and I just don't feel comfortable with the idea. It's incredibly expensive too and I'd rather them spend their money elsewhere. I am torn though. I know I will be overwhelmed no matter what and I don't know how much time DH will be able to take off once the baby is born. My family works as well. So having a nurse may be beneficial. On the other hand, we live in a little house with one tiny bathroom and a dog who needs to get accustomed to all these changes too. I don't know how I feel about having a total stranger in my house. A good friend of mine had a nurse and although she appreciated the help, described the nurse as very moody. That's the last thing I need! So no, you are not crazy. I will probably decline the offer myself.

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
I just want to add that having a nurse doesn't require handing your babies over to a stranger :) I did everything myself - but for me I felt it was nice to have some guidance with certain things I was uncertain about. She really taught me a lot, and supported me...even did the baby's laundry. I had hurt my back very badly during labor - so it was nice to have the help...but I still did all the mom work.

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
it is doable I had a csection and actuatly hosted a party at my house 2 days after i got home from the hospital Im psycho that way lol. Id have to say if you can afford it and you want to do it then do so. because im worried about this time around having a csection and having a toddler and the baby and my dh is taking that many days off.Im sure though I will have some family stopping by to try and help if you have family near by then you prob wouldnt need a nurse.

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
every woman is different...I wouldn't make a decission until the baby is actually born...then see what your insticnt tells you.
My sister and I nursed after a C-Section...and my cousin who wanted to...tried but it just didn't work for her after having a C-Section.

I agree, I never even thought of this....IMO doing all that stuff you would hire a nurse for is part of having a baby. I think maybe with alitte help from family and friends you will be fine!

Re: Am I crazy to not have a baby nurse???
It's absolutely doable. After I arrived home with my daughter, I was pretty much alone from the start. Honestly, I liked it b/c I was able to develop a routine and rhythm with my baby that a nurse/aid would've hindered simply by being there. You just have to pace yourself and realize it's quite alright if you never get dressed some days and that you only shower to not be gross, climb into new PJs and go to bed.
