Am I the only one who feels that having a mandatory donation is wrong???
so I joined a new parish and signed my kids up for religion so it costs $235 for the 2 kids and additional $75 communion offering so thats $310 already .so as I was leaving they said and there is a mandatory $200 donation to the church each year
my old church costs $125 for the first child and $25 each additional and there communion offering is only $50
oh and if you are late with a payment to this new church the late fee is $50

I'm not sure how I feel about it but temple membership and hebrew school are outrageously priced.

Without getting into a debate about religion...this is why I have issues with organized relligion. To me God never meant it to be about money.....

My thoughts exactly. Religions seem more like businesses these days. It's crazy!

No, you are not the only one. I think it's wrong to make a donation mandatory.

Oh boy, ask my mom about this one, whoah! She paid a small fortune for me to be able to make confirmation after I refused to make pro-life posters and told the head priest I was pro-choice! They kicked me out and my parents had to pay thousands for me to be confirmed. I feel bad now considering I am no long Catholic

Re: Am I the only one who feels that having a mandatory donation is wrong???
I don't think it is wrong.
These things cost money and the church is just trying to collect that money.
They call it a "donation" for tax reasons but in reality it seems like more of a fee for the classes. WHich I think they are entitled to. The prices are a little high at this new church, I could see that point.

Re: Am I the only one who feels that having a mandatory donation is wrong???
i would be annoyed at it being called a mandatory donation, thats an oxymoron. if they feel threy need the money, call it what it is, a membership fee, or whatever it comes out to be.

I think it's wrong to make it mandatory. They have to pay for books, electricity, etc - they're only tax exempt. I'm sure you can ask for a waiver or reduced rate if it's an issue.

Re: Am I the only one who feels that having a mandatory donation is wrong???
I am not sure what demonination you are but Catholic Churches in NYC don't charge a mandatory donation. Other denominations tithe and that just blows my mind. When I do go to church I give what I want and even when the babies were baptized, I wasn't charged a fee...they suggested a donation, but that is all...I never understood how the temples in my area sold tickets to services....I thought prayer was free....

No its wrong. I think that some in this day and age have to charge for things because how will they run or function without it. BUT they should have a sliding scale, somethiing like that.
Im SURE if you cannot afford it they will work with you.

All churches are 10% of your yearly income and thats per YEAR. Giving a small amount every sunday plus more at holiday masses. Its not much. Well its more then I can afford to give, but I think to many its not much.

mine doesnt charge or suggest anything like that, they suggest a $200 donation at Christmas time.
They do have "donations" for weddings and christenings and stuff. They also have a school attached, so maybe that is where they get their revenue.

The Catholic church as a whole suggests ths 10%..not individual churchs...I guess the Roman Catholic Diocese feels individuals should do 10% of their income.
Thats the suggested donation to churches.

Ours said that in the church "handbook" when we joined a new church parish to have Noah baptized. When they give you the giant stack of 52 weekly envelopes etc. Every church I have been to has with it the paper that says Catholics believe 10% is generous donation or something to that blah blah blah effect.
Sorry edited wrong.
