American Cheese - Is it healthy??
DS loves american cheese he eats like 3-4 slices a week, DS eat it melted om wholewheat bread, loves it melted on a bowl of elbow pasta, or just plain single slice.
So I was wondering is it healthy?
What do you think??

Well, it's not "real" cheese. It's processed so I guess it depends on who you ask. I don't think 3-4 slices a week is unhealthy.

It's probably not the greatest, but DS eats more than that in a week. He loves grilled cheese sandwiches. I try to buy the organic cheese. It makes me feel a little better.

Re: American Cheese - Is it healthy??
Its not that healthy. But you can try cheddar cheese, or 2% american cheese which might be better.

Re: American Cheese - Is it healthy??
I thought it is pretty healthy since it is a source of calcium. I try to add it to things for Thomas since he doesn't drink a lot of milk.

This is what I thougth too, but now I'm not so sure.
I read somewhere that it is processed cheese, which sounds not so healthy to me.

Doesn't that depend on what you buy? Personally I never buy the Kraft singles because it says right on the package "processed cheese food" even if it does say made with milk. If you go to the deli counter though, you can buy "real" american cheese, and if you look closely at the packaged cheese you can buy "real" american cheese.

What kind of American do you buy that isn't processed? I know Land O Lakes is sold at the deli counter, but it's still processed cheese. I was under the impression that all american cheese was processed. Cheddar, sharp, etc. isn't.

Most American Cheeses are processed cheese...even the ones from the deli counter. Although they usually do have less additives. "Processed " in and of itself doesnt make it a bad cheese.
Caden eats a ton of cheese....
