American Idol Gives Back- spinoff
If you do not mind me bringing up a new topic to ponder about last night's events... The thing that annoyed me about last night, like every other recent TV charity is that all of the people on the show saying the words, "please donate, we need your money, give your money to help.." are all multi-millionaires with each probably having an average of 100 million in their bank accounts or assets, ie. Simon, Tom Cruise, Gweneth Paltrow.... So, why are they begging for my dollars? They are the rich ones. Those images last night were so heart-breaking, but I know I can not financially help at all. But, those celebrities truly can. They have the loot. They made their money off of us buying movie tickets, albums, concert tickets, so why can't they donate on behalf of all of us who can not afford to.

I am sure they all opened their wallets.... and AI has done a good job at getting their corporate sponsors to donata large chunks of money as well.
Just because they make a lot of money-- does not mean they keep it all to themselves. And because they chose to keep what they donated private, does not mean they have given nothing.
Look at Oprah-- she does a ton of amazing things with her money-- and she still lives an incredible lifestyle.

Re: American Idol Gives Back- spinoff
I was thinking the same thing last night while watching and bawling my eyes out.
But I do agree that we don't know that they didn't donate or how much. And as much as I'd like to know how much each celeb donated (especially Simon who is disgustingly rich) they do have a right to keep it private.
But I do find it a little insulting to have billionaire Madonna sitting there hugging a child and asking ME for money. Maybe they should just get normal people to do the asking and let the celebs do what they do best - make an appearance.

Re: American Idol Gives Back- spinoff
I think part of the point (besides the $) is that everyone should do what they can and be aware that there is so much poverty in the world. I think it was to show people that these things are going on in the world and that we should look outside our own lives everyonce in a while.
but back to the $ - even if a person can only donate $10 it can make a difference. If they have 30 million people donate $10 that is 300 million.

ITA, we do what we can, and celebs do what they can, but all of us together can make a difference. They use celebrities to ask for money, because, lets face it, regular people love famous people.

there are so many charities it is an impossibility to support them all! I think if every person would pick 1 charity and donate regularly, it would make a difference...

Re: American Idol Gives Back- spinoff
I was watching the news this morning and they were saying that there hasnt been such a disparity between the wealth of the top 1% of the country and the bottom 99% since the Great Depression. So - I agree with you. That 1% really needs to start redistributing their wealth MORE than what they are.

Oprah is a perfect example. The woman worked HARD for her money, so I think she has every right to live the good life if she wants to..but she still does give back all the time. I actually thought it was pretty smart of AI to do what they did, AI is a huge machine with millions of viewers..it sounded a little "telethon-ish" to me but look, the end result is that they raised a lotta $ for the people in need.

Re: American Idol Gives Back- spinoff
i agree that it seems a little bit strange to have these people who have TONS of money begging for our money. BUT, i'm sure they all did donate, or they probably wouldn't have been on the show. also, like somebody else said, saying that we, ("regular" people) can't afford to donate kind of isn't true either... because if we each gave up buying a cup of coffee for a few days, and could donate even just $10... if all the AI viewers did that, it could REALLY add up

Re: American Idol Gives Back- spinoff
I think they going on the theory that "every little bit helps". So even if you're donating $10 to their $10,000, it's still something, it's still a contribution and it's still helping.
Think about it, if celebs didn't act as advocates for charity, half of us wouldn't be as aware as we are and we wouldn't donate...
