An I missing something re: Breastpumps covered under Obamacare?

So a friend of mine got a FREE top of the line pump and in home BF consultations as she claims is thanks to new Obamacare laws. (her baby hasn't been born yet)

I'm pretty sure my ins (GHI) still doesn't cover a breast pump unless its medically necessary after the baby is born.

What gives, is it her insurance that's just awesome (not really Obamacare...or am I misinformed?!?

My insurance covers a breast pump (Ameda, Medela or Playtex). Has nothing to do with Obamacare. I placed my order today.

I do not get in-home consultations unless I pay privately for a LC.

More Info

Under the Affordable Care Act, breast pumps are covered 100% by insurance for all healthcare plans that begin after August 1, 2012. This applies to both the purchase and rental of breast pumps. Your insurance company might have restrictions on which pumps they cover, or cover them at 100% only if they are purchased in-network. However, many plans cover any pump you choose by reimbursing you about 80% of the cost. So know your options. Ask your plan administrator to give you your breast pump coverage information in writing. Because this is still a confusing marketplace, phone calls might yield different information than a written request. Even if you’re not covered under the Affordable Care Act yet, many insurance companies do cover breast pumps. Almost all plans cover some type of breast pumps if deemed medically necessary. - See more at: http://www.hygeiainc.com/will-my-insurance-pay-for-my-breast-pump/#sthash.mUV8SEuF.dpuf

Thanks. I think it must just be her insurance that covers them. If it was an Obamacare law, I would think all insurance would have to do it.

I am totally clueless when it comes to insurance. I called Edgepark Pharmacy and they handled, but I had called my insurance company a few months back to even see if it was covered at all.

The Affordable Care Act does have something to do with it. It's taking some time to get into place but under the Act breast pumps will/should be covered.

They do if the plan started after August 1, 2012. Plans before that are not required to provide them it seems.

I was not eligible for a pump in 2010 when I had my daughter, but I already got mine for DC#2, AND I get breastmilk bags every three months. I thought it was because of the new health care act?

Based on Eliza's info it definitely could be. I had no idea...I thought mine covered it just as a perk!

That might be why GHI said they don't unless medically necessary after the baby was born....it's DH's plan through NYC that he's had since 2002.

But thanks for all the info, I'm definitely going to look into it further!!

I am covered to but would have been covered prior to Obamacare. It covers at 100% and they are top of the line Medela. I can't order it until baby is born.

I have UHC and I get a double electric breastpump, but I can't order it until my Chat Icon is born. They need a birthdate in order to ship it.
I lalso get up to 500 dollars toward a LC after the baby is born. I have to pay OOP and submit to UHC for reimbursement.

Yup. GHI does not cover the pump unless your plan started after August 2012....a*holes!

Well, unless it is "medically necessary" which would mean your baby was in ICU or had severe medical problems.

DH's insurance plan is grandfathered in so they do not have to adhere to the new law.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have UHC also. Used Edgepark & got my pump (Playtex double) in a week..it was a seamless transaction. No need to call ins company just the supplier after baby is born.

An I missing something re: Breastpumps covered under Obamacare?

Ghi NYC is "exempt" bc of the grandfather clause. So they do not cover it. They suck.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I guess I'm grandfathered in a therefore don't benefit from this aspect if O-Care...hopefully this grandfather clause also means we won't have to deal w/ all the BS the law also brings. I'll take the good with the bad, I guess...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm assuming you're union? The GHI union plans are grandfathered, meaning they negotiated to be exempt from this law under Obamacare. You can search my old posts about it here or FM me if yuo want. But the short answer is, no, not for you.

My insurance always covered and this goes back to the Bush days. It is not an Obamacare thing, its just depends on your coverage. I have always had Empire BCBS.

Yes but not all insurances cover them and under ACA, they are required but only if the plan began after August 2012. Another fab benefit to the ACA IMO. Unfortunately some insurance companies are sticking with the only new plans are eligible thing.

Definitely has EVERYTHING to do with the ACA for most people. The ACA also covers the cost of lactation consultants allegedly- I wouldn't know firsthand however as I have GHI- Urgh!!

THIS! I don't know about every insurance but I BELIEVE GHI and Magnacare are 2 insurances that if your plan started prior to the act then it does not pertain to you.
