...And the kids in my school are out of control!
So i think it was wednesday i got into the auditorioum and like 15 kids are running around the stage and walking on top of the piano playing the keys with their feet
AND IF YOU THOUGHT THAT WAS BAD....
a kindergartener ran ramped into the school library and tore books out of the selves turned over chairs and literally made it look like a tornado flew in
the same kid also threw milk in the classroom, juice water and a whole bottle of hand soap on the floor
CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY!!!!!

Let me guess, you work in NYC right?

Unfortunately, there aren't many options for consequences in NYC schools.

i completely agree. i can't believe a school is this out of control and no one does anything. it makes no sense.

Sounds like my school, too. I work in Brooklyn, and the kids at this school are out of control. Nothing gets done about their behavior. I feel trapped!!

In NYC, hands are tied...it's really pathetic. The worse you can do is reprimand and even then, you have to watch what you say.

Exactly!! Y ou can NOT keep them after school for more than 10 minutes because if they miss the bus YOU are in trouble. Remember the City is not zoned. Some students live quite far away. You can not keep them for more than 15 minutes of their lunch. They have the "right" to eat.
The kids know the rules, the consequences, and how to play the system.

They do things and they dont do things, their are lunch monitors but its hard to control that many out of control kids
an upper grade teacher told me today as she was picking up her class from the yard "i hate going in there the kids are acting like savages, this one is beating up that one...one is jumping off that platform and these two are wrestling smacking each other and the rest are screaming bloody murder"
when i saw those kids running on top of the piano i was like wow thats something new, yet not shocking
and yes this is a NYC school

Re: ...And the kids in my school are out of control!
Ok ...maybe I'm just but what grades are we talking about?
Im in a public school for K-6 in the Hudson Valley and I take away recess time from the students for misbehavior. Also, after a serious enough action I can write the student up and send them to our SAVE room...which is like a detention room. I believe our JHS and HS also have the same system.
I totally agree with not taking away lunch or keeping them afterschool...but why isnt there SOME other type of system in place in NYC schools? This environment doesnt seem to be keeping with NCLB cause it seems like the kids arent learning

Its a K-5 school, the monitors do tend to take away recess alot but even that becomes null and void after so many times
we have a SAVE room but its only for grades 3-5 very only in extreme special cases do they put someone in k-2 in there
its weird becuase the kids so do have those moments when they good in class and learning but it is only when the classroom teacher is there
we also have a number of kids whose parents wont recommend to be evaulated becuase they dont want there child in special ed or on medication
and most of the kids i am talking about are in the k-3 range
i mean weve had a 5th grader arrested recently for assaulting the secruity guard i think....and a 4th grader removed from a class for threathening to kill the teacher...its not by any means an easy school to teach in

Re: ...And the kids in my school are out of control!
We have a too small, overcrowded in house room that is never available when I need it. The kids are taken from class, reprimanded by deans for ten minutes or so and then brought back to me.

Thank you for explaining. I wanted more information before making a judgement.
After that, I feel all I can give is and . I hope that despite these conditions, you are reaching these kids on some level. I have a student who in the past has been violent and aggressive and mean. I tried a new approach and am "loving him to death" this year. and its working. However its only 1 student I need to handle this year- not the 7 like I usually get in my class.
Stay strong!

yea i try the best that i can...its def hard tho...i know i have reached a few kids, but id say about 75% of the kids need lots of help academically, emotionally and mentally
i try to think and take things one day at a time, because everyday some new issue arises
