Andrew is taking 10 oz at every feeding but ped said not to give rice cereal yet...
She said I should wait until he is 6 months old. The formula is just not satisfying him.
How old was your little one when you started rice cereal? I don't think he can wait until 6 months old. 10 oz is getting crazy and expensive

Wow!! That is alot!! I have heard the not until 6 months thing, but I would like to also hear who has done it before. Did the doctor say why not until 6 months?

She said because he will be more prone to allergies if I start him early. Doesn't really make much sense. (I hate my ped and I am switiching. She never makes any sense)

Re: Andrew is taking 10 oz at every feeding but ped said not to give rice cereal yet...
Alyssa was drinking 8 oz every bottle and still hungry. The pediatrician said she needs to start cereal earlier than normal. She said to start her at 3 months because she is not getting satisfied and was drinking so much formula she gained 4 lbs in a month.
ETA: To be honest I already started her on cereal and fruit the past 4 days, She will be 12 weeks on friday. She has been eating oatmeal cereal with applesauce for 4 days now and her formula intake has went down to about 4-6 oz each bottle and she has started taking naps during the day again.

Re: Andrew is taking 10 oz at every feeding but ped said not to give rice cereal yet...
Ok I might get flamed but I started DS on cereal at a very early age for this reason. I truly believe that some babies can just be satisfied on formula alone. I started him at about 5 weeks and he did GREAT on it. I listened to my mother, not pediatrician as this is when I started and was fine. I made sure that DS was ok and that it agreed with him. I say go with your gut and if you think its a good idea to try for your child, then give it a try.

10 oz is alot! Is he taking over 40oz/24 hr pd?
I started rice cereal when DD was 4 mos. Typically this is about when they can start solids. Sometimes DR's recommend to wait till 6 mos if the baby is breastfed but your child is clearly taking in a lot of formula and may need to start on some rice cereal.

I am going to go and get it. Forget about this ped.
What do I do? Mix it in his bottle with the formula? Or do I feed him the rice cereal and still give him the bottle? I am so confused

How old is your DS? I would try to give it to him thru a babyspoon and not in his bottle. Follow the directions on the box. As the baby gets used to eating it you can make it thicker.
Once you start the cereals you should still offer up the bottle. Until the baby eats substantial amounts of baby food they will still rely on the bottle for their nourishments

Ok. If you really want to give him cereal then definitely follow the directions on the box (it will be watery the 1st couple of times you make it) and see if he will take to eating it. Don't get discouraged if he doesn't know what to do with it as he may not be ready for the cereal. Everyday you can try little by little.
I have never put cereal in the bottle so I can't offer up any help here but there are ladies that have and hopefully they can help you out. Since your DS is young you may want to do this route as well. Just make sure it isn't too thick for him to drink.

I would use the spoon not the bottle. My pediatrician said the bottle is a choking hazzard. Also she said babies who arent ready to eat from a spoon have a natural reflex to push foreign things out of their mouth with their tongue, Alyssa did this when i first tried to feed her cereal at 2 months since she didnt know how to swallow it, so i waited up until 4 days ago and now she actually swallows it.

Re: Andrew is taking 10 oz at every feeding but ped said not to give rice cereal yet...
I wouldn't add it to the bottle either.
You can mix it in a bowl with formula and feed him with a spoon...start so that it's very liquidy, and as he gets more used to it you can make it thicker.
Some things to expect --- he may HATE it at first...just be persistant and he'll eventually love it!
His stools will change almost overnight. If you are starting with rice he will probably get constipated. What Idid was mixed the rice with applesauce but you might not want to go that far yet since he is young...
Some moms start with Oatmeal and that helps with the constipation.
Let us know how it goes! I do think it's time to start if he is eating 10 oz at a time. Emily never even ate that much, the doc said never to give her more then 6 oz at a time, that it wasn't necessary.
What area are you looking for a pediatrician in?
Maybe we can get some recommendations going!

i started olivia on cereal with bm at 5 months because she was always hungry and showed an interest in food. becuase of allergies i was told give oatmeal or rice for 5 days straight to make sure there is no allergy. at 6 months we started solid foods an been doing fine since.

I also agree with not adding it to the bottle, but my ped told me to do it for my DD. She is only 3 months old, and we are only doing it to thicken up the milk (to decrease spitting up). I was told to add 1tsp of rice per 2oz of milk. It dissolves pretty nicely as long as the milk is warm. It really is still pretty liquidy and I don't think it is a choking hazard this way. I had to switch to stage 2 nipples since the thicker liquid wouldn't fit throught the stage 1 nipples.
If they still have the reflex to push stuff out of their mouth, you're not going to get that cereal in!! Maybe you could try just adding a little bit of rice to the bottle like I was told to do. That might do the trick.

Wow, 10 oz My daughter is only taking about 5 oz. at a feeding, if that. I started my son on rice cereal at 4 months, and I will probably start Lauren then too. She isn't even 3 months yet and the formula seems to be doing its job for now.
