Anemia help...

I found out yesterday I'm anemic (I'm 27 weeks). My doc recommended iron pills and said feosol is ok. I went to the vitamin store and the guy recommended an herb called blood builder. He said it wouldn't cause the constipation (thank goodness) and has a much better absorption rate. It contains 27mg iron, and also contains 15 mg Vitamic C, 400 mcg folic acid, 30 mcg Vitamin B-12.

I have a few questions, anyone ever hear of this herb and is that enough iron? Also, how long did it take you to feel better when you started taking iron supplements? I'm so tired and dizzy and now I finally know why.

Re: Anemia help...

I am 28 weeks and 2 weeks ago was told the same thing by my doctor. I have been using Ferrosequels iron supplement and have had no constipation.

I have felt a little better since taking them.

Re: Anemia help...

It depends on the form of iron - did they say total or elemental? I think total in supplements is usually 325mg and elemental is 65mg...

If you are taking PNVs I would just take what your doc says or ask him/her before making that decision.

Good Luck and feel better!

Hi Kat !! Chat Icon
Feosol only contains Ferrous Gluconate which is a form of iron that doesn't make the person to be constipated and it has 325mg of iron. I think you may want to check with your doctor since what they gave you also has more vitamins and you are already taking a prenatal. You don't want to be taking too many miligrams of a specific vitamin...even though the excess is usually secreted in the urine but you should make sure with the doctor. Like Folic Acid usually 1 milligram is enough and your prenatal vitamin should have that but then this other vitamin also has 400mcg...just double check to be sure.Chat Icon

Re: Anemia help...

I was diagnosed anemic this pregnancy and when I was pregnant with Melanie. I took Slow Fe, its 30 mg, and it didn't cause constipation. My OB recommended it.
