Anesthesia for IVF - $$ - VENT !!!

I just got a bill from the Anesthesiologist for $500Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Really?? Really? I was out for a total of 3 minutes. They didn't even submit it to insurance. Not sure why? Did anyone have insurance cover this??

Dr. B never told me I would have to pay separate for anesthesia, he gave me a total amount for IVF and I paid 2 months in advance. Now I get this bill. Which, I think is RIDICULOUS. It is so disgusting how people try to take advantage. Insurance, doctors, clinics, etc.

I plan on fighting my insurance company on this one. They didn't even give me a choice, if I even wanted anesthesia and then to send me a bill and say no insurance accepted. I DONT THINK SO.

When I had my D&E it was also a separate bill for the anesthesia- though I know that's a TOTALLY different situation- but still .. I don't know why it's not all covered under the same thing Chat Icon

Anesthesia is always a seperate charge and it is not part of the IVF fee....

most insurance companies cover it (or at least 80% for non network) you need to submitt the claim

I am at Cornell and they charge around $1,300 for it!! I usually pay around $125 out of pocket after insurance...

I haven't started IVF yet but I called my insurance (GHI) yesterday to see what was covered. I was told that there are 15 procedures not mandated to be covered by the state. Anesthesia is one of them. I was told my insurance would cover 75% of the cost. I have no idea why they said they will not accept insurance. That sounds insane. When you get more information, can you post it. I will doing it with Dr. B soon and would just like to have a heads up.

Good Luck! All of this stuff is insane

I still think when discussing IVF costs it should have been at least mentioned.

I knew it was a separate charge. The anesthesiologist was out of network, but they still billed my insurance company and then the insurance company sent the check to me and now I have to forward it to them.
Sorry you have to deal with all this insurance crap on top of all the stress of IF.

I'm really shocked you didn't know about the added expense. I was told right from the get-go that anesthesia was extra and wouldn't be put through to the ins..in fact that I had to have it the day of the retreival. I never even bother with the claim, just paid it, but maybe now I will try to get some $$ back. Already paid out 1K on top of the IVF expense.

This happened to me when I was with LIIVF when they removed a polyp. I got a bill. I just paid it but I think I should have submitted it to my insurance. Too late now.

Actually "they" never really told me much, nothing was in writing. One day i came in and receptionist said oh, you need to pay your 25% today, and i handed over my card.

I got a call back from the anesthesiologist’s office, they didn't receive any insurance from my REs office. They will submit it now, and let me know how much I have to pay.

I've come to realize, everytime i ask a question to anyone the first response is always a NO. Just because that is an easier answer then for anyone to ACTUALLY do their job.

That's a very inexpensive Anesthesia bill. For IVF, it normally runs from $750-$1000. Remember... good anesthesia means a more still (and breathing) patient and they harvest easier and get more follies.

Your RE should have mentioned what the cost would be up front (they are well aware, as they work with a private practice anesthesia group and work out the costs).

Aetna reimburses fully. Other companies charge it as pert of "infertility coverage."

I did IVF with Dr. B and was told that anesthesia was out of network but that they would submit the claim and when the ins co paid me I had to forward them the check. I was also told that even though it was out of network they would accept what the ins co paid as full payment since Dr. B is in my network. I didn't have to pay anything. Hope this gets resolved for you Chat Icon

Re: Anesthesia for IVF - $$ - VENT !!!

I was surprised to when they told me it was 500. I called Dr. B's office right away and they reminded me that they had told me that I would have pay that. I totally forgot about it. I didn't even think to send it in to my insurance maybe I will. I just thought that because my insurance didn't cover IVF why would they cover anything extra. Dr. B is cheaper then the others so honestly I felt we were saving money anyway.

As an FYI, you certainly should submit it to your insurance company. Even though my RE bills my insurance directly, the anestehsiolisgt comes off my medical portion of my insurance NOT off my IF lifetime max.

I had to pay $700 out of pocket. The Dr my practice uses is a non-negotiable out of network provider. I didn't even know this until I was stimming already! Apparently my insurance would cover her as in network since my IVF Dr is in network but the ins co would only pay her less than $200 for the procedure therefore you have to pay it up front and then fight your insurance company to get it back! Nice right!! I am 6 1/2 wks pregnant and still have heard nothing about getting reimbursed!! UGH! I feel your pain!

This is exactly the type of thing that disgusts me. I feel they KNOW they have the upper hand and put women in already horrible positions at their mercy. Seems so unfair.

Then I get an attitude from the receptionist, "oh well you didnt know alllllll anesthesia is separate" NO sorry $itch, i never had surgery before and i didn't know i needed to go to medical school AND have previous surgery experience for your clinic not to r%pe me.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
