Re: annie the movie - age appropriate?
I think 5 is fine. This was the first movie I ever saw in the theater. I was around that age I guess a few parts could be a little scary though I just looked it up, it orignally had a G rating but it was changed to PG. Maybe the teacher should have sent a permission slip first.

Re: annie the movie - age appropriate?
i think it would depend on the 'temperment' of the children....for some 5 would be fine, but for others - not so much.
i'm more upset that the teacher wouldn't let her leave! that is disturbing to me!

Re: annie the movie - age appropriate?
see that is diff. you got to explain why they don't have moms, and why she was so mean to the orphans. the teacher didn't even talk about it. I am more upset that they wouldn't allow a five year old to leave the room when she was scared. She was crying... this really needs to be adressed!!!

My GFs daughter knows the songs to this movie by heart since she has seen it so many times. She is 3yo.

Re: annie the movie - age appropriate?
The preschool girls at my day care are obsessed with Annie.
The issue here is more with the fact that she made to watch a movie that scared her

Re: annie the movie - age appropriate?
As a music teacher, I can tell you I don't show that movie to kids under third grade. I think there's scary parts and I don't even like explaining to the older kids that Ms. Hannigan is obviously a drunk because they DO ask! That being said, where is it that your niece was supposed to go? She's that teacher's responsibility at that time and she can't just let any kid who wants to leave just go. But if it was me, and there was a student that upset, we'd abandon the movie and move to something else.

Re: annie the movie - age appropriate?
okay - i am a teacher also.. i would have NEVER allowed a child who was upset stay in the room when she was obviously upset wit hthe movie. call the nurse.. maybe she can go with her.. or like you said STOP the movie. I am not saying that annie is inappropriate but i am saying that if it is making a 5 year old upset - do something about it! oh and PS they should have let the parents know that they were showing the video!!!

Re: annie the movie - age appropriate?
My step-sons loved Annie when they were very little, probably 3-4. Its actually one of my favorite movies and I cant wait to show my DD. The part that bothers me is that the teacher wouldn't let her leave the room. That is wrong!

Re: annie the movie - age appropriate?
I don't think I would have realized that parts of it are scary. I guess that is because it is a musical and my son is still at an age where the he would not follow the story as much as he would just rock to the beat. I see your point now, though. It certainly would at least require explanation if shown to a current day elementary school class.

Re: annie the movie - age appropriate?
At the end of the school year I was very preggo and was unsure how long I'd be coming in to work, so I started to show Annie to my 3rd graders (I teach music). I had seen it a gazillion times, so I didn't refer back to it to make sure it was appropriate. Duh!!! Well...I had one kid making a huge deal over how drunk Miss Hannigan was....another going ape-sht over them saying the word "damn," another kid saying "eeew he kissed her boobs!" when Rooster kisses Lily on the chest as he dips her in "Easy Street". Never again!!! Granted - I saw it in the movie theater myself as a kid and watched it countless times....just never saw it that way.
Personally, I'll have no trouble showing it to my daughter. But from a teaching standpoint, I'm going watered-down Disney version of Annie instead. Not worth the potential controversy. I was lucky I didn't hear anything from parents!
