How do you go abput getting an evaluation? Do we need to see our pediatrician first? Or can we just call a dr who specializes in ADHD? Our insurance does not need referrals so i am assuming I can just find a specialist. Also, how do you go about finding a good specialist? I don't want a dr who is just going to hear what we have to say, look at our child and say "Yeah, she has ADHD, let's medicate her". I don't want to medicate her and I know a lot of drs are quick to diagnose and medicate. I want a good dr who will listen to us, be on the same page as us, and help us. We have been having tons of issues with our 6 year-old daughter for quite sometime and these past 2 months it's been affecting her in school. We had a REALLY rough week and I think it's time we see a specialist. TIA!

Generally, the parent starts with discussing their concerns with the Dr.. They should give you a rating scale to fill out along with one for the teacher to fill out. I would also let the school psychologist know your concerns. He or she can guide you to what your specific district handles ADHD concerns. Sometimes the psychologist will interview your child and fill out a rating scale based on reports on how they are feeling personally (being able to concentrate, fidget, ect). Some parents take their child straight to a developmental / behavioral psychologist not associated with the school.

Thank you! After speaking with my daughters teacher on Friday, she actually will be seeing the school psychologist this week or next, so I will wait until that happens and then speak to the psychologist about her.

Schools can not diagnose anything. If you are looking for a true evaluation for ADHD then you need to see a doctor not associated with school. The school staff can work on some accommodations in the meantime but you should really go see a professional.

I am not looking for a diagnosis fron the school. I am looking for maybe some guidance from the school. My pediatrician has dismissed many of our concerns in the past but since she is going to see the psychologist anyway, I will wait and see the psychologists recommendations.

We just made an appt on our own when we suspected something. We go to Dr. Victoria Chen at LIJ. I was convinced my son had adhd but she told me that he would start to calm down around 4 years old. To her credit, she was right. She wanted me to focus on diet and supplement intake. We see her twice a year now and provide feedback forms from both ourselves and school teachers.

We just went straight to a Neurologist. The first one we went to was ready to write a script after 5 minutes in the room. We declined and left. I got another referral from a friend, and that Neurologist sent us to a Nureopsychologist who did a series of tests (about 5 visits, 3 hours each), an EEG, and a sleep study. Then he sat down with us and gave us a full report. At this point I was comfortable enough to discuss medications and treatment options. And from there we went to the school report-in-hand, for accommodations.

Sounds like she is not quick to diagnose then, which I like! My Daughter is 6 and over time it is just getting worse. I have removed certain Dyes from her diet, which helped for a while, but then her behavior started getting worse again. I will look into this Dr! Thank you!!!

Can I ask who the neurologist you saw was? The referral you got, not the first one. I definitely don't want someone who is quick to diagnose and medicate. I want tests done if necessary, I want someone to explain things to us, I want to know our options. We just can't continue with how things have been going lately. It's been really rough!

We saw Dr. Firouztalé, at South Shore Neurology. We went to the Patchogue office but they have multiple offices in Suffolk. The Neuropsychologist that he works with is Edward Barnoski at the same Patchogue office. They also took my insurance. I was very happy with them.
