Another B-Photo Shoot Question (which is why we should have a photography board!!)

OK, so I won this photoshoot and it includes a one hour session, 30 images and 1 8x10. Because this photographer mainly does children, engagements etc., she is willing to stay for longer to expand her portfolio. She is coming to my apartment with lights and the whole she-bang.

She told me she works woth a stylist who does hair and makeup for 150. Then she told me she made a mistake and she really charges 350, but because she is also working on her portfolio, she'll do it for 200. I have to buy the lashes. She will stay for the shoot.

My question---

I have a gift card to my usual salon for a blowout and can get airbrush makeup done for 75. Lashes would be an additional 25, bringing the total to 100. If I take the subway to the salon and back, that's only 5 more bucks, if I drive it's "free" (though both neighborhoods-mine and the salon's have terrible parking situations) or I can cab it, which would coat about 35 total.

So what would you do? Spent the extra 100 bucks on the "stylist" who would stay through the shoot or go with my usual girls and save the money.

I already won the photo shoot, though I am sure I'll be spending $$$ on extra prints and jpegs. Sigh.

Honestly I would save the 100 bucks and go to your own stylist. I don't think it's necessary for her to stay at the shoot for an hour or two.

I would also save the $100 however...

The day I had my b-pics was rainy and windy and all around crappy day. I had my hair/mu done at the hotel where I had the pics taken and I was happy I made that decision. I also had to commute into the city and travel to the lower east side. If your commute to and from your location is not that bad, then I would save the money.

I would slpurge and spend the extra so she could be there and do touch ups...that's me...I'm vain, and would want the pics to be perfect, and considering you're not paying for the pics, why not...Chat Icon

This is kind of what the photographer said, but no straight out. In the end, it's only 100 bucks... and I remember when I got my hair and MU done for DD's 1st b-day party ( I heart getting hair and MU done) it was rainy and windy and I had no car and ended up having to schlep a bunch of stuff from my Mom;s to the little reception hall about ten blocks away---horrible!

And...when you think about it...it sounds like you were willing to pay the $150, so it's really only $50 more, not $100 Chat Icon (Yes, I know that isn't right, but, I would totally justify it to myself like that!)

I'd save the money and go to my usual stylist. I'd rather have the extra $100 to buy more prints or put towards an album, but I'm on a budget.

I think if the shoot is only for an hour you're not going to need a stylist there.

BUT

Keep a powder compact nearby so you can check your makeup and blot excess oil or fix your lipstick and gloss.

You should ask the photographer if they do any retouching.

I would do it, honestly in professional pics with the lighting etc, I feel you need to have your m/u done.

I splurged and did hair and makeup (was only planning on paying for makeup) and I'm SO glad I did.

i'd save the $$ and go to your stylist who knows your hair and your best features.

if you won the package and will spend $$ on prints, its a good way to save $$ somewhere else.

good luck!

from my experience, a photo shoot for 2-3 hours, you don't really need much touching up. the worst is the lipstick. unless you plan on doing different looks with the makeup but I would think she would charge more for it.

I would save the extra $50 and put it towards photos you are going to have those forever, and IMO ts worth more than the chance you need to be touched up. Besides, they will probably be touching up the photos anywayChat Icon
