Another bath question- anyone ever renovate their own bathroom?
I'm thinking of attempting this to save some $$$...my parents are giving us some new fixtures- a toilet and pedestal sink from a new bathroom in their new house that they are demoing (turning 2 bathrooms into 1 larger bath).
All the plumbing is already in- it would mostly be tiling the floor and redoing the walls (TOTALLY re-doing them- they are rotting away in some spots)
Is this feasable?

DH did it. only PIA was sweating the pipes so they don't show behind the pedestal sink. he also replaced every wall with new sheetrock and insualtion. only thing he didn't do was a new window since that worked fine. he tiled the walls half way up.
If you are handy and can do the work it saves a lot of $$. but if you don't have all the tools, and time, its not worth it.

If you are handy, have the time and right tools then yes. Otherwise, it's a nightmare.
It's very time consuming to do it. So plan more than a couple of days. Pros gut a bathroom and redo it in 1 week. That's what they do every day. So you can count on doing a lot slower than they do. They also have the tools, trucks, etc... to make everything easier.

my mom and dad did. they watched a how-to video on tiling and rented whatever tools they needed, if they couldn't borrow them. they did it quickly... about a week. all subway tiles. cost about 3K, qutes from contractors ranged from 8-12K.

Re: Another bath question- anyone ever renovate their own bathroom?
we plan too do this with all of our ren's except for exterior work but our hands will be held by my father who is pretty good at work and my brother in law who's career has been in construction/carpentry all his life and he does bathrooms/kitchens all the time.
I would say start taking classes at Home Depot getting videos out the only thing is really tricky is plumbing in my mind and if your keeping it all the same you should be good. If you need to update wiring i would def. hire a pro for that part.

I've retiled one of our bathrooms, replaced the toilet, took out the tile counter around the sink and custom cut my own solid surface counter, and replaced the sink. I've done walls in other rooms.
As long as it isn't your only bathroom, it's definitely doable. Like APs mentioned, it will take time, so make a large guess as to how long it will take you, then double that, and you might be relatively close....

We are doing all of our renovations except electrical upgrade. If you are handy then I don't think it would be a problem. If you are not handy then I might want to leave it to a professional.

This is going to be our project in January. My father has done his bathrooms at least twice so he is going to help us. If it wasn't for my dad, we'd be paying someone. The good thing for us is that this is a second bathroom so at least we aren't in a rush to get it done.
