Another computer Q: sacrifying hard drive size for faster processor
Would you "downgrade" to 320GB from 500GB to get a faster processor for a laptop?
Main use: pics, FB, photoshop Element. Most pics are stored in an external hard drive.
TIA

Yes..
I don't want to make a general statement but the majority of users don't fill up there Hard drive.
Now, with LIF'ers, some/most on here are really good about terminology about computers.
With that said, its 50/50 that would would see a noticeable change between processors.
what are some other differences between the computers?
and what is the speed difference? same processor?

Re: Another computer Q: sacrifying hard drive size for faster processor
My only concern would be how much space Photoshop takes up? We had it on my mil's laptop and as soon as it was installed, the compujter was torture to use. When dh took it off, it moved so much faster.

this is more about processor speed and memory rather then hard drive space. Some programs do take up alot of space but not noticeable on larger hard drives these days.

I agree with Tom. Plus, it's very easy to add an external drive. You can't (easily) increase the speed of the CPU....

All my pics are in an external drive. I posted above the 2 computer options I am looking into.

Re: Another computer Q: sacrifying hard drive size for faster processor
what are the prices of these. You arent buying this custom at HP, right?
i would swap out the bluray for more hard drive space
AMD rubbed me the wrong way with mobile processors twice.. i would personally go with the Intel.
i don't see many comparisions with these two processors. Im guessing you have these two machines lined up as they cost the same or nearby.
AMD back in the day were cost effective in providing performance against intel. So this is the reason why you can get a slightly faster machine compared to the intel.
You Blu-ray is really throwing this comparison off. I thought I wanted a Blu-Ray in my computer but depending on your viewing habits, i don't think its required. It will drain your battery more then a dvd as the blu-ray is pushing more content to be processed by the computer.

Re: Another computer Q: sacrifying hard drive size for faster processor
Those are NOT custom build computer.
They are "cheap".
I did not pick blu ray. Could not care less about blu ray? Now my Q is... can I use burn regular CDs on a blue ray drive?
Price different: about $150 cheapest being AMD version.
I remember when AMD was just as good as Intel a few years ago. But I have not shopped for a computer in that many years. My laptop almost officially died so I need a new one but I can't spend too much $$ on it.

Re: Another computer Q: sacrifying hard drive size for faster processor
if money is a concern, i would save 150 and spend it some place else.
I a fan of HP too so you got a good system.
i would do some more homework and check out techbargains.com and slickdeals to see if there is anything else out there.
these systems like 499 and 649?

Re: Another computer Q: sacrifying hard drive size for faster processor
I would go with the i3 processor. I have an i5 and I'm really happy with it. I don't hear great things about AMD.
Can the RAM be upgraded?

$150 won't break the bank. I just decided I did not want to spend $1K+ on a computer.

Re: Another computer Q: sacrifying hard drive size for faster processor
personally, there is no reason to spend 859 on a typical laptop.
you can spend less and wouldn't see much performance difference 600 dollar range.
you can use that to get other stuff for the hoildays.
after i feed the family dinner, i see what other hp's are at there for ya

Thanks!
I went tonight and ended up getting the Intel 3 version HP. It was on sale for $599. That was right my alley. It was supposed to be a "online" only deal but the guy ordered everything for us. He put in a few "extra" on top.
Thanks so much everyone for their input!

Good deal. Any other computer with the same specs would of been a little less but you pay a tad more for HP.
Enjoy ;)
