Another COSTCO question...

Sorry... I hit the wrong button.

If it's just you and DH do you still go to Costco or BJ's? It seems like such a waste for us and we get so sick of anything we buy in bulk. It's great for parties and such but I can budget better by going to the supermarket once a week.

Thoughts?

DS doesn't really eat anythingChat Icon so it is just DH and I. What we have been doing the last 2 times is splitting big items that go bad with my parents. This has been working out great for us. And we save a lot of money.

Re: Another COSTCO question...

Its just DH and myself and we go to Costco for a select amount of items:

Dog Food
Pigs Ears (for the dog)
Hot Pockets (which are way cheaper)
Cans of Chicken Salad (for lunch)

I try to avoid perishable foods being DH and I don't cook that much being its just us two.

Re: Another COSTCO question...

mom and I tried BJ's years ago, when I was a teen... TOTALLY didn't pay for us!

we found out that we would do much better merely by buying things on sale at the grocery store. besides, it takes a lot of storage space to make the bulk items work for a family....

We go to BJs because we are addicted to the big bags of Perdue Bourbon Chicken Chat Icon

We have gotten new tires at Bjs and that was cost effective.

For stuff like garbage bags and what not it has been great. I buy milk at BJs- so much less.

We only go for things that do not go bad, coffee, filters, cleaning supplies, etc. Or things we use everyday, like lunch stuff, granola bars, etc.
I could never buy produce there, it would go bad before we could use it.

I love Costco, one reason being is that I can walk into Costco here in England, and feel like I am in a time machine and I will walk out into Costco in Carle Place.

Its the same all over the world! Brilliant!

Re: Another COSTCO question...

We thought about it, but it just wouldn't pay for us. I do well shopping the sales and cutting coupons.

Re: Another COSTCO question...

not at all! DH and I buy a lot there!

meat/chicken (I break it up into portions for 2 and freeze them)
cheeses
paper goods (sometimes)
cleaners - LOVE the giant 3 pack of Lysol wipes for less than $10!
trash bags
juices
crystal light
vitamins
DH's deodrant
dressings for marinades
spices
cereal

we save a TON of $ there just on the meat & chicken alone. Purdue is almost $5 a lb at S&S, it's $2.79 at BJ's. plus the chicken comes in individual pouches (2 in each) ready for the freezer - awesome!

We buy so much there.

Milk is the best price there, and now they have organic for my kids. I also buy yogurt everytime and I am the only one who eats that.

We buy a bunch of frozen items and some produce, some is not worth it since it is too big, but asparagus is a great deal as well as bananas.

We don't buy the big rolls of tp or paper towele there since my MIL watches the sales at stop and shop and Waldbaums and gets them for better prices fro us.

Laundry detergent, soap, dishwashing liguid, vitamins, wipes and deodorant are all good prices and we have the room to store the extra.

Re: Another COSTCO question...

We go to Costco once a week sometimes because we buy all our fruit there and other things that are staples in our house. We go there when we have bbqs and we buy chicken and bbq it and have meals for a week & half.

I buy all our cleaning supplies, detergent, water, paper towels, tp, cooking oil, paper plates, and I am sure I am missing a few other items.

We love it!

see that's the thing, though... I just bought chicken breast at fairway for the same price... and it was thin-sliced!

Obviously every family's needs are different... but if you don't have a good deal of items you could buy there in bulk and store at home, it's likely not cost-effective for 2 people. There are many retail shops (target, walmart) where you can shop sales and get cleaners for as low a price w/o the bulk packaging....

You can never have enough toilet paper. The day I stop needing that, I am in big trouble.

Re: Another COSTCO question...

I have a membership mainly for the big bottles of water. I am in charge of the water cooler at work and we get the best price from BJ's.

It's also handy to buy things in bulk for summer BBQ's and such.

Oh - and laundry detergent. Chat Icon
