Another drive or fly dilemma... wwyd

I know some people hate flying and some can't fathom being in a car more than a few hours but thought I'd put this out there to get some feedback.

We live in FL and are going to NY for christmas/new years.

Dec 22nd/23rd to Jan 1st/2nd... whether we drive or fly.

We'll have tons of gifts from family for DD (which would need to be shipped if we don't drive).

Flights are double the price of what it would cost in gas to drive both ways. We can afford the flights but I would LOVE to save that money.

DD will be 16 months.

2.5 hour flight vs 18-20 hour drive.

We've done both already with DD. She was a nightmare on our last flight in July and an angel during the drive.

It will just be the 3 of us... no IL's this time.

DH wants to fly.
I want to drive.

WWYD?

I still vote fly.

I can handle 2 hours on a plane better then almost 20 hours in a car.

I generally would choose flying as the better option, but I'm thinking of all the presents you'll have to bring back. I'm just thinking it would be easier to pack them in the car than having to figure out how to get them back home on the plane or having to ship them, etc.

I say drive.

Ditto! I have to get where I'm going fast. I can't sit in the car that long.

Re: Another drive or fly dilemma... wwyd

I don't know-I usually base it on our last travel experience.

Our kids are pretty great travelers, but the last time we drove (Jan of this year) the trip up was horrible. I think it was worse because we had to stop constantly for both of them-they alternated who would be fussy instead of coordinating it.

We've flown 2xs since then and it was a dream-and once it was just me and the kids on the way up.

So, based on that I would lean towards flying (for us).

For you, since you came off of a bad flying experience and since it is a longer trip and because of the gifts, etc, I would probably drive but plan to stop places where she can run around and really stretch

The thought of that long of a drive with a child stresses me beyond belief Chat Icon so I vote to fly! Especially if you can afford the flights.

My longest roadtrip with DD so far has been 9 hours....I wanted to drink heavily when we arrived Chat Icon But I'm impatient and don't enjoy roadtrips either.

Plus, if you fly you'll have longer in NY with family/friends.

Will you need the convenience of having your own car when you are in NY to visit friends and go wherever you want, whenever you want? If so, then drive.

I hate being at someone else's mercy when we go away. I like the freedom of getting in the car and going to the store whenever we want/need.

You could not get me to drive for 18-20 hours in a car. Unless I HAD TO make the trip and I had no money to spare.

That's confirmed by 2 recents clients who did this trip and ended up on my table and swore to me they would never drive the distance again.Chat Icon

My mom and my dad are both always offering their cars whenever we need them (and my sis will be down with her car) so that's not an issue.

Me too. I wish I wasn't so scared b/c I have to do it often since we have family so far away. Just looking for flights to book makes me nervous. Chat Icon

i love to fly so i would say fly BUT if you really hate flying i would drive!

the only road trip that DH & I will take with DD, is out in the midwest, get a car somewhere in colorado and go all around there.

20 hrs is a lot, but im assuming you would break it up into 2 days right?
not drive straight?
Thats what my parents used to do with us, make it a 2 day trip.

We drove straight last time but we had IL's with us. This time i'm thinking we'd stay over and make it a 2-day trip. Now thinking about that... that's 4 days we DON'T have to spend time with family. Chat Icon I'm thinking DH is right and we should just fly.

I hate being in the car for long periods of time so I say fly.

We drove to NC in June and the way there was ok since we drove overnight except that we were soo exhausted by the time we got there, and I honestly worry that whoever is driving may fall asleep. But at least DS slept most of the way.

The way back was rough because we hit traffic and it's just a long time for anyone to be cooped up. And DS got really antsy.

We're planning on trying to fly down at Christmas. Hopefully it will go well - we'll have to change planes and it's Chat Icon but the thought of driving again....Chat Icon Chat Icon

I only say fly because of the short amount of time- you will be wasting 3-4 days driving int he week that you have. If it wasn't the holidays I would say drive.

I say fly. We flew to Chicago for Christmas last year. ds was 3 1/2. portable dvd was key! I did all my shopping on-line and had all the gifts shipped directly there from the stores. I wrapped everything once we got there. I also packed lightly. I have a luggage set where one piece fits inside the other for storage. I packed my clothes just like that inside the smaller one. I then had the larger piece to bring home all ds's gifts in. hthChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree-kind of just get it over with-especially if you don't need your car while there.
