another forbidden food question: cheese
I'm so confused. I love cheese, and I eat practically every variety. Now that I'm preggo, I'm supposed to avoid 'soft', unpasturized, or 'fresh' cheeses. Can someone elaborate on that?
What's considered a soft cheese? cream cheese? mozarella? ricotta?
what if it's been baked to death (lasagna)
Is any cheese ok if it's made with pasturized milk? or are all wet/un-aged cheeses a no-no?
the blue cheese / goat cheese /brie is more straight forward. I get it. nothing outwardly moldy or unpasturized.
My first ob/gyn appt is over 3 weeks from now... I just don't want to mess up royally just becuase of my lust for all things cheesy.....
thanks everyone

Re: another forbidden food question: cheese
As long as it's pastuerized it's okay - soft or hard. My Dr. said to avoid cheeses not made in the USA, otherwise eat all the cheese you want!

Re: another forbidden food question: cheese
As long as it's pasturized you can have it.
Some of the questionable cheeses are things like gorganzola, fresh mozzarella, goat cheese, brie, blue cheese, etc., but again as long as its pasturized it's fine.

Re: another forbidden food question: cheese
I stayed away from blue cheese, and feta (i was dying for feta.. love it) my sis told me i wasnt allowed to have.
I did eat ricota, mozzerella, american, swiss, chedder, cream cheese, sour cream (not a cheese but thought you want to know if it was okay).
CHEESE FREAK HERE!! biggest thing to over come when i was prego.

Re: another forbidden food question: cheese
Just make sure its pasteurized, but if you're cooking it, then there really is no problem. The concern is for Listeria, and the bacteria is killed with heat.

My doctor said packaged Feta like Athenos is fine because it's made with pasturized milk just not the real fresh imported block feta.

Re: another forbidden food question: cheese
anything pasteurized is okay. basically, if it's available at your grocery store, it's pasteurized. unpasteurized cheeses are usually only available at specialty stores, farm stands, etc.

yeah, I'm a cheese-whore. I totally go to fairway (the specialty store to end all gourmet desires) every week to get my fix. You name the unpasturized / stinky / moldy / delicious item, and they'll hand it to you once I even got tibetan yak cheese
that's why I needed such extreme clarification. We literally eat $20/week in ususual cheeses.... luckily, every label they have mentions whether or not the milk was raw or pasteurized....

Re: another forbidden food question: cheese
you and i are same same let me tell you, it has been a rough 30 weeks so far without my favorite cheeses. places like fairway or cheese specialty stores usually have good staff that know their stuff. i've had good experiences asking for something "stinky and pasteurized." eta: my doctor did not tell me anything was wrong with blues and i have definitely been eating them.
