Another holy$$$ post!
I was looking at my claims on my insurance company website, and for my hospital stay last week the bill was $13,400! Thats without any kind of birth or anything, what is it going to be when I DO deliver TWO babies??
I have no idea how much of this I actually have to pay, the claim is still being processed... I hope its no where NEAR this amount!

I just called my ins today to get an idea how much we should be in for. I got a letter from the hospital that Vag births are up to $6850, and c sec or $10, 250 for 2008. My ins will pay 80%, with a $325 deductable. That is on top of the few thousand to the ob already.
CRAZY

Re: Another holy$$$ post!
You can call yoru insurance and they will tell you your deductible that you will be responsible for ahead of time. Mine requires me to pay $500. and the hospital is cool, they let me do a payment plan at no interest, it was easier to pay a little a month then all at once b/c of not working.

Re: Another holy$$$ post!
Wow..... I can't beleive how much some of you ladies have to pay out of pocket......
I am so glad I took the more expensive medical plan at my job. Its only $675 more than the lower plan & I have no deductible at all as long as I use in network doctors & facilities. My hospital stay & maternity services are 100% covered.
If had taken the cheaper plan, they would only pay 90% after the $500 deductible is met. I would be so mad if I had to pay anything out of pocket. We just don't have that extra money.....Taking the more expensive plan this year was the best choice I made.

I didn't realize there were deductibles and % co-pays for health insurance until I read lizzy's post. I can't imagine having to think about those costs on top of all the other costs associated with the baby.

I do have the more expensive plan - I think its a $250 copay and then they pay 90%. However I also have a maximum out of pocket each year, and I don't know exactly how that works.

Yea every company negotiates different deals for their healthcare. Its crazy. I have a feeling my job's healthcare plan wont be soo great next year, but the cost is definately going to go up. They just finalized our plan this past week, so our enrollment period starts 12/1. They are so late doing it this year. I am glad I got preggo this year & not next year.

Re: Another holy$$$ post!
Your co-insurance isn't based off the original bill, it's based off the paid claim. So if your hospital bills 10k, the insurance pays the negotiated amount (none ever pay the full amount) of say $5k, and your co-insurance is 10%, you will pay $500.
Also, I would recommend reading your policy manual for your co-insurance, etc. What my manual said and what the insurance company said were two different things. I'm glad I read my manual and appealed all of my bills.

Hospital stays are crazy. When we were in the hospital last year the bill came to 956K. I have over 211 claims I believe. Granted we didnt pay that much OOP but still the what if we didnt have insurance scared me.

Re: Another holy$$$ post!
I was induced and had a vaginal birth and my hospital bill was $13k.
I only had a $300 co-pay though.
My BFF's emergency c-section was $30k.
