Another HR related question... Can someone tell me what AFLAC is/does?
I don't want to ask my HR cause I don't want them to think I am prego... even though, I am asking because I am wondering if we should get it before I get pregnant.
I had gone to Aflac's site and it didn't really give me any info, and I requested for someone to contact me and they never did.
How does it work, and what does it cover??

It does cover pregnancy but only after 10 months. I was told we would need 5 people to join together. Once you have it you can take it wherever you go. Its very annoying but they don't sell to individuals in NY.

Your Company has to offer it to all it's employees and to work well ie: get the benefits when needed, you need a good AFLAC ref to help you thru any paperwork. Ours turned into a nightmare because our rep. flaked on us

They basically provide STD, LTD, life insurance, etc without having the entire organization / company commit to it. For example, you can purchase a life insurance policy but your next door cube neighbor doesn't have to. From what I was told, the company itself does not have to put any $ down, all of the premiums are completely employee funded.

Yes each employee pays the premium thru P/R deduction.

is it after you have been employed for 10 months, or 10 months after conception?

and each company has it's own negotiated rates, or are they pretty standard?
Does it matter what state I live in? I work in NY, but live in NJ.

You get the policy and would be covered 10 months after the start date. Go to their website and call teh 800 number-I did that before. GL

yeah- I went to their site and opted for email correspondence since I have NO PRIVACY to talk at work... and no one contacted me.
SO, I wouldn't get it til I got prego? Are you insurable if you are pg?

This is very interesting to me as my employer offers an Aflac disability policy. How exactly would this work? What are the costs v. benefits?

My friend had AFLAC - you are not covered for 10 months - so if you get preggo and then get AFLAC, you are SOL because the baby will come before you can get your AFLAC benefits.
So get AFLAC, wait a few months, then get preggo, and you are good to go.

Aflac offers many coverages but I guess you are interested in short term disability.
It is an individually owned policy but it must be sponsored by your company. This is b/c Aflac will require that they see everyone to increase the number of policies they write. You will be asked medical questions and will most likely be denied if you are not in good health. If you are able to enroll, make sure you read the fine print.
There is a waiting period (I guess 10 months?) before the policy will pay out, so don't get pregnant during the waiting period!
Does your company offer a short term disability policy (other than the NY state mandated one) or a maternity policy?

So, if I want to TTC in 3 months, but give birth after the 10 month period is over, it won't pay out??
My company's policy is sh!t... 2 weeks for every year of service. I have been here 6 months. Which means, even if it takes me a while to conceive, if I give birth post 3/09-- I only get an additional two weeks paid-- AT 60%.
After that, then I think I get $170/week for the remainder of my time out. I believe this is state.
This is a significant loss of income which is why I am looking into other ways to cover the loss, besides saving money of course.

I would have to check the fine print, but a waiting period on an insurance policy usually means they won't pay out in that period of time. So for the first 10 months, they won't pay a benefit - that means you are out of luck if you conceive within one month of getting the policy.
If your company decides to offer it, make sure you ask the aflac rep that question to clarify.
NYDBL is $170 a week - it's ridiculous!
You may also want to try an insurance agent to see if you can get an individual policy through another company like Unum, MetLife or ING. Sorry, my speciality is group benefits, not individual.
