Another job question - sorry ladies!!
I know you are getting tired of these but I feel you all are really the only ones who can give me opinions on this since I don't have any teacher-friends here on LI.
Anyway I got an email from a principal to see if I was interested in interviewing for an Oct-Jan leave replacement. Prior to and after would be a perm sub position.
I have a full-time job in the city lined up but would love to be on long island, would you give up a f/t job for a leave replacement on LI if offered?

I probably would. This is an opportunity to get your foot in the door and also prove yourself so that when an opening becomes available you are there and you are their frist thought and consideration! If you want LI, then I would go for it. Communting the the city everyday is probably not fun either.

that's what i am thinking. this whole job searching situation is hard. i don't want to miss out on a LI opportunity but don't know if a leave is worth it.

Leave replacements are tough! We had a great one this year, but at the end of the day, there was no spot for her next year since the woman she replaced came back.
I think I would pick it over the City, because you'll have the advantage of already having your foot in the door next year.
But I'm still hoping you get the other LI job that you want!

I think it's good..as long as she said you will be a permanent sub before october and after January. I personally woudn't b/c of benefits, but i remember you saying your don't need any so i think it sounds great for you!

I personally wouldn't. I think there are so many people out there taking leave replacements. There is someone in my district on her 3rd leave replacement. If you don't need the money and stuff I would, but I personally need job security!

Re: Another job question - sorry ladies!!
If it was a full year leave, I'd do it - for three months - I wouldn't. Math is in high demand - I think something else will come your way, if not this year, than next year - but I personally would not give up full time in the city and in the retirement system for a three month leave.

if you really want to get on LI and don't need benefits, I would take the leave replacement.
You'll be able to teach in the City next year with more certainty than LI.

Re: Another job question - sorry ladies!!
Leave replacements are tough. Some districts def hire their leaves, and some def do not. I am not sure if you are comfortable with posting where it is, but if you do, someone might have insight. If its a district that hires their leaves, I would take that one.
Good luck!

Re: Another job question - sorry ladies!!
i was offered the same thing but in the beginning of the year- i had already accepted a job in the city- full salary and benefits... wasnt guaranteed anything w the LI job but a chance to get my foot in the door- well i did and have been working in LI for the past ten years... I went for it... I would take a chance you never know!!!

With the leave replacement, there is no guarantee for next year. With NYC, if you got excessed, they still need to find you a job essentially, so there is more safety. Plus, subbing sux.

I wouldn't. You are better off working for a full year or two in the city and then trying to get into LI.

Re: Another job question - sorry ladies!!
based soley upon my experience this year, I would take a full time position over a leave. I thought I was getting my foot in the door, but they slammed it in my face I think it does depend on the district though

Just be careful....I heard that if you break contract with the city you won't be able to work for them for a year....
